I recently finished reading the book “Beyond Cancer” by Dr. @Rubagumyaf , a powerful collection of stories and reflections from people affected by cancer. A deeply moving and important read. A few reflections 👇

In #cancercare, timing makes all the difference.
Early detection and quick treatment are both key to survival. Still, many patients find out about their cancer late and start treatment even later. This leads to higher costs, puts pressure on health systems, and lowers the chances of recovery.
To help more people survive, we need to support early screening, quicker diagnosis, and fast access to treatment. Waiting too long for #cancer care not only raises costs but also puts lives at risk.

Today, we stood in solidarity with the @UNRwanda family in Rwanda to mark #Kwibuka32, honoring the lives lost during the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.
Together, we remembered, reflected and reaffirmed our shared responsibility to stand against hatred, division, and injustice.

I'm deeply impressed by these stories that @Rubagumyaf , an oncologist in Rwanda, gifted me. Brutal humanism, so necessary in our work.
Stories that matter.
Thank you!!
At the @csoncol Annual Leadership Meeting in Montreal, I had the privilege of sharing a signed copy of book Beyond Cancer with the @ASCO president, Dr Small @ASCOPres bringing patients stories from Rwanda into a global oncology conversation.
These past three days have felt surreal. Just two years ago, we launched Rwanda’s medical oncology fellowship program, and today, three of our inaugural fellows defended their theses, the final step before graduation. They will become the first medical oncologists to be trained locally in Rwanda, marking a historic moment for cancer care in our country. They join a small but growing national oncology workforce of 13 clinical oncologists, 4 medical oncologists, and 1 pediatric oncologist. This achievement reflects vision, trust, hard work, and the belief that Rwanda can train its own specialists to an international standard. It is a proud moment, not only for the fellows, but for the future of cancer care in Rwanda.
“We must learn from past failures & protect the living — by rejecting hatred, inflammatory rhetoric & incitement to violence.”
—@antonioguterres as we honour the 1 million people who perished in the genocide against the Tutsi in Rwanda 32 years ago.

Rwanda has made major progress in hepatitis B & C screening and treatment.
But our study shows a critical gap: very few patients receive recommended surveillance for liver cancer (HCC).
Prevention must be followed by early cancer detection.
