I couldn’t be more proud of my good friend, John Guttierez, the new Police Chief of the San Bernardino City Unified School District.
His experience, education, and service are nothing short of remarkable, but what truly sets him apart are his leadership qualities and his innate ability to be an empathetic listener who pays attention to the details that matter most. The students, parents, and staff of SBCUSD are fortunate to have a police chief who genuinely cares about the safety, well-being, and future of every student.
It came as no surprise to me that he was selected for this position. John has always led with integrity, professionalism, and compassion, and I know he will do an outstanding job serving the school district and community. Congratulations, Chief Guttierez. Well deserved.

The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department is heartbroken by the passing of Sergeant Grant Ward, who was called home on February 1, 2026, after a long and courageous battle with cancer.
He passed peacefully, surrounded by his wife, two daughters, and his loving family.
Even during the most difficult treatments, Grant’s spirit never wavered. He faced each challenge with faith and determination, reminding us all that laughter can bring light to even the darkest days.
Please keep the Ward family in your thoughts and prayers during this incredibly difficult time.
USC Price Professor of the Practice in National and Homeland Security, @Erroll Southers, is releasing a memoir this March: Inside the Castle Walls: An American Journey Through Espionage, Counterterrorism and Government.
From a pivotal childhood moment to a career in public service shaped by high-stakes national security work, Dr. Southers offers a rare perspective on leading change from within.
The memoir features a foreword by Arnold Schwarzenegger and praise from civil rights attorney Connie Rice, who describes it as “a riveting ride” grounded in duty, loyalty, and conviction.
