Today is my last day at @ICRC. Sixteen years to the day since my departure for my first mission in Darfur in August 2007.
It has been an honor to serve and be part of making a difference in the lives of some.
As the world is urbanizing, conflicts are urbanizing too.
@ICRC is calling on States and parties to prevent and mitigate the cumulative and growing humanitarian impacts of #UrbanWarfare.

Cities may become ghost towns unless critical infrastructure can be maintained, people receive support to rebuild livelihoods, and civilians who are forced to flee are better protected.

Urban warfare affects 50 million people: lives and livelihoods shattered, homes destroyed, access to essential services impaired.
At #WUF11, @ICRC engages municipal authorities on ways to strengthen urban resilience, and calls on belligerents to uphold their IHL obligations.
Deeply concerned by the devastating #humanitarian impacts of #WarinCities, the International #RedCross#RedCrescent Movement adopted last week a new action plan to raise awareness, prevent and respond to the humanitarian impact of #urbanwarfare. #WUF11👇

When cities become battlefields, people make life or death decisions: whether to stay or flee.
This is the voice of Sohayla who had to ration her food to one meal a day to survive in Marawi City, Philippines.
Together with its new resolution on #WarinCities, the International #RedCross#RedCrescent Movement adopted last week a resolution to strengthening the resilience of urban communitie. #WUF11👇

In #Syria, over a decade of conflict has shattered families and destroyed lives, homes and infrastructure.
Over a decade on, millions are still critically in need of assistance.
In 2021 alone, the ICRC has assisted over 17 million people across Syria.
Armed conflicts are increasingly fought in urban areas.
From Aleppo to Mosul, from Gaza to Kharkiv, 50 million people suffer the consequences of urban warfare.
Now at the #WUF11 'Extraordinary Dialogue on Urban Crisis Response and Recovery', @GCarbonnierICRC calls for better support to #WarinCities to mitigate the cumulative impacts on habitat, livelihoods, essential services and critical infrastructure people depend on.
