Young women’s voices are essential to building inclusive governance and lasting peace in South Sudan.

Our latest Annual Monitoring Report, developed under the Inclusive Governance for Peace Project: Promoting Young Women’s Meaningful Political Participation in South Sudan, explores the realities, challenges, and opportunities shaping young women’s engagement in political and decision-making spaces. Supported by the United Nations Peacebuilding Fund (UNPBF) through the United Nations Development Programme (@undpsouthsudan) in South Sudan, the report highlights several key findings:

🟢 Young women are active agents of change, contributing to peacebuilding, advocacy, and community leadership.
🟢 Capacity-building, mentorship, and support networks are key enablers of meaningful participation.
🟢 Structural barriers, economic challenges, and safety concerns continue to limit young women’s access to decision-making spaces.
🟢 Meaningful inclusion requires moving beyond representation and ensuring young women have real influence in governance and peace processes.

🚨 With more than three months since her arbitrary detention, the whereabouts of the Sudanese peace leader and women’s rights activist Najwa Musa Kaunda remain unknown.

SIHA Network reiterates its call for her immediate and unconditional release and holds the SPLM-N Al-Hilu/Tasis Coalition responsible for her safety and well-being.

Moreover, we remained concerned about the growing rate of unlawful detention with respect women, children and civilians all across Sudan.

We urge the international community and human rights organisations alike to press for Najwa’s release, along with all those similarly detained in South Kordofan/ Nuba Mountains and in the country more broadly.

Despite the hardships caused by the war in #Sudan, women continue to carve out spaces for hope and recovery, spaces where they can reclaim moments of familiarity and reassurance, and lean on one another as they navigate the pressures of daily life.

Coffee circles have long offered women a sense of connection and belonging. Today, they hold even deeper significance, becoming spaces of healing that embody women’s resilience: their ability to create moments of joy, stand by one another, and persevere through even the harshest circumstances.

This is a glimpse into a women’s coffee circle organized by the Feminist Emergency Room in Al-Diyoum Al-Sharqiya in #Khartoum State, as part of the psychosocial support activities implemented by SIHA Network.

Trust is often seen as a value. But for feminist movements, it is also a strategy.

Women’s rights organizations and feminist activists from Somalia and the Horn of Africa gathered in Hargeisa to reflect on building stronger movements in times of division and uncertainty.

Through honest conversations and collective reflection, participants explored challenges that can weaken solidarity and identified ways to strengthen collaboration in the fight against gender-based violence and the advancement of women’s rights.

One participant captured the spirit of the workshop:
“Before this workshop, we understood the importance of building trust among feminist organizations and activists. Now, we understand that trust goes beyond relationships—it is also essential for working together, applying for funding collectively, supporting one another, and strengthening our collective power as a movement.”

When trust grows, so does our ability to organize, support one another, and create lasting change. Stronger relationships build stronger movements.
