🕋 The Family Entrusted With the Key to the Kaaba

The people pictured are members of the Banu Shaybah (Bani Shaiba / Al-Shaibi) family, the historic custodians entrusted with the key to the Holy Kaaba in Makkah.

Their story goes back more than 1,400 years, to the Conquest of Makkah in 8 AH (630 CE).

When the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ entered Makkah and the Kaaba was cleansed of idols, its key was brought to him by Uthman ibn Talha, a Companion from the family entrusted with the Kaaba’s care.

After opening the Kaaba, the Prophet ﷺ returned the key to him and said:

“Take it, O children of Talha, forever until the Day of Resurrection. It will not be taken from you except by an oppressor.”

According to Islamic tradition, the responsibility remained with the family and passed through generations. Today, the Al-Shaibi family continues to hold the historic custodianship of the Kaaba and is entrusted with opening and closing its door during authorised occasions.

One of the most prominent recent custodians was Dr. Saleh bin Zain Al-Abidin Al-Shaibi, who passed away in June 2024. Arab News reported that he was the 77th key holder from the time of the Conquest of Makkah.

What makes this history remarkable is not simply the key itself, but the trust (amanah) attached to it—a responsibility connected to the House of Allah and preserved across generations.

Allah says:

“Indeed, Allah commands you to render trusts to whom they are due…”
— Qur’an 4:58

May Allah preserve the sanctity of the Kaaba and grant those entrusted with its service sincerity, humility and righteousness. Ameen. 🤲

اگر آپ گولیوں کی حکمرانی چاہتے ہیں تو پھر وہی قانون ہوگا جو عوام چاہتے ہیں۔ اس لیے میں بڑے تحمل سے یہ بات واضح کہنا چاہتا ہوں کہ یہ ایک سیاسی معاملہ ہے، اس کا سیاسی حل نکالیے۔سردار امان کشمیری

Totally condemn the killing of innocent people in Mirpur and other areas of Azad Kashmir.

Shooting directly at protesters who were peacefully expressing their political views is barbaric.
