Some of our committee spoke this morning with @PaidPlacementNZ and the hard mahi they're doing to push for paid clinical placements and training! We spoke about the risks to wellbeing and safety for unpaid paramedic students, and the workforce risk posed.

Paramedic degree students are an indispensable part of the ambulance industry as the future professional workforce. They complete large amounts of clinical hours that put them at risk for lack of financial safety and burn-out, which are a significant contributor to attrition.

Practical placements are valuable and essential for many qualifications. But unpaid training in a cost-of-living crisis is contributing to high dropout rates and ongoing workforce shortages. "Great learning opportunities" is not a currency people can pay their rent with.
