Analyst Reports New Thai Road Construction Near Disputed Border Temple

A conflict analyst said new satellite imagery indicates Thailand’s military has expanded infrastructure and positions in a disputed border area with Cambodia following clashes late last year.

Nathan Ruser of the Australian Strategic Policy Institute said on Wednesday that since Feb. 10 the Royal Thai Armed Forces had built a road to the Naengmut hamlet and linked positions along a plateau ridge toward Prasat Khnar, a contested temple captured during fighting in December.

According to Ruser, the development establishes effective Thai control over about 7 square kilometers in that sector of territory claimed by Cambodia along the frontier with Thailand. He referenced annotated satellite imagery and maps showing the road alignment and surrounding area.

In earlier comments on Feb. 11, Ruser said Thailand had been extending its presence over several weeks from the Phnom Skat Krabei area to coordinates 14.419, 103.67, which he described as about 1.75 kilometers beyond positions taken during the December clashes.
