What many, and apparently Bessent included, fail to remember is that the majority of commodities and products that flow out of Hormuz…
They’re NOT oil.
Can pipelines be built for oil? Sure! … at great cost and unclear how safe they’d be from Iran…
But to assert that the Strait of Hormuz will no longer be a critical waterway… that’s just plain cope.
I’ve read 900 of these ponderous “why is Israel losing support?” pieces and they always opaquely refer to “the war in Gaza” or “Israel’s conduct”
Israel killed, on avg, 86 children a day from Oct 2023 - Feb 2024 for all to see. “War in Gaza” doesnt really capture this does it?
The world is going to have a religious reckoning after this war is over, and we need to get out ahead of the hatred to come.
Religion, in and of itself, does not make a person inherently good or bad. If you are atheist, that doesn’t make you “better” than someone who is Christian, Jewish, or Scientologist for all I care.
The problem right now is there is a LOT of division happening in the world that is directly or indirectly tied to religion.
The country of Israel, let’s just be honest… is not well liked at this point for their actions in Gaza and Lebanon… but now ESPECIALLY for their role in “tricking” the United States into the Iran War.
That will directly lead to LEGITIMATE antisemitism, not the “you’re antisemitic because you disagree with the actions of Israel”, but it will be reduced to “Jew = Bad”.
Hatred of the Islamic faith is already deeply rooted in American and Western minds after the past 25 years. Pair that now with the perhaps even greater hatred after an embarrassing defeat to “the Islamic extremists” in Iran, and that will only increase the misplaced hatred that many in the West have.
And even still, the absurd Crusader mindset of Pete Hegseth and many in the Trump administration to push Catholicism/Christianity (church and state?), which has now led to the disaster we are seeing in the Iran War, and that will only lead to a greater distaste for the Christian faith as well.
All of these perception shifts are understandable. But they are also WRONG.
Being Jewish doesn’t make you an inherently good or bad person. Neither does being Muslim. Neither does being Christian. Or Atheist. Or any other faith or not-faith.
We need to be proactive in making sure that the events of the past 6 months (plus) does not reduce itself into greater hatred for entire groups of people.
Judge the individual for THEIR behavior. Don’t simplify and reduce people based on preconceived beliefs of the “group” they belong to.
My concern about Trump’s (apparent) willingness to escalate here is what the most likely escalation pathway is.
While many point to the bombing that has taken place over the past week, the movement of aircraft and assets into the region, and clear choreographing of what could be a limited boots on the ground operation… that’s NOT what is most likely.
The most likely option is that President Trump moves forward with, at least, Bridge and Power Plants Day.
This isn’t about “reopening the Strait of Hormuz”, this is about terrorizing the Iranian civilians. Plain and simple.
My concern however, is that he won’t stop here. Many of the most vicious Iran Hawks, the very same people that have overwhelmingly driven our Iran strategy thus far, are pushing for Trump to go much further.
They’re calling for Trump to strike water storage facilities. Wheat storage. To bomb vital economic infrastructure in Iran that would devastate the civilian population. To force inflation to skyrocket, the Rial to collapse, unemployment to wreak havoc.
My concern is not (necessarily) that Trump will put 50,000 boots on the ground to seize Qeshm and Larak.
My concern is he will systematically target and destroy large swaths of civilian and economic infrastructure to terrorize the civilians of Iran. To create a TRUE economic crisis. A humanitarian emergency.
And of course, Iran will retaliate in an even more devastating way… I’m just not sold that Trump cares about that anymore.
PLEASE, I never ask anything, but if you’ve made it this far, PLEASE share the post. Like it. Bookmark it. Comment on it.
The stakes are so high right now, and we need to be working TOGETHER to do everything we can to prevent catastrophe. We need to fight back how we can.
Reports and video suggesting the US bombed a major crossing on the Iran-Iraq border.
The crossing was crowded with hundreds of people, many of them pilgrims undertaking the Arbaeen journey to Karbala. Unclear how many casualties.
Hard to see what, if any, relevance this has to degrading Iranian capabilities in the strait.
the american empire is ran by the lowest class of trash on earth. the president is a former real estate rapist. the vice president is a dumb hick. the guy who runs the military is a wife beating alcoholic.
just disgusting
Just moments ago, President Trump stated that every time Iran strikes a vessel, the United States will destroy a bridge or power plant inside of Iran. At the most basic level, this is what we call "looking for a reason to commit atrocities".
The most likely scenario in the US/Iran War is that the United States continues to waged all-out economic warfare against Iran. This is done via a combination of maximum-pressure sanctions, the US blockade, and the systematic and overwhelming targeting of civilian and economic infrastructure inside of Iran.
The goal is undeniable: maximum civilian suffering.
That IS the goal here. Blowing up a bridge is not going to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. Neither will destroying a power plant. If there is anything we have all learned throughout this conflict, it's that Iran's asymmetric warfare capabilities, when paired with their geographical positioning, borders on insurmountable.
No. The GOAL from targeting economic and civilian infrastructure inside of Iran is to make the civilian population suffer as much as possible, and this is where the Trump Administration has a fundamentally broken understanding of economic warfare.
The best, and perhaps only, chance that the United States has to win this war is by the Iranian civilians rising up in protest and toppling the regime. Unfortunately, this is something that President Trump has made almost a fantasy due to a plethora of missteps throughout this war that have garnered domestic support, and undoubtedly turned the Iranian people against the United States.
It started on the very first day of the war. Not only did we assassinate a religious leader in the Ayatollah, but we also killed 168 children in a triple-tap bombing of the school in Minab. Even worse? We tried to cover it up and sweep it under the rug. Then came President Trump's threat to wipe out Iran's entire civilization. Not "the regime", their entire civilization. Then we bombed pharmaceutical, petrochemical, and steel manufacturing plants that put almost a million people out of work. After this came a blockade specifically meant to cut off Iran's ability to access wheat, medical supplies, cooking oil, and proteins. Then we bombed their water storage facilities, water infrastructure, and water desalination.
There IS NO HOPE for the Iranian people rising up and toppling the regime anymore. President Trump has ensured that this is nothing but a delusion at this point.
So what is the PURPOSE behind striking bridges and power plants? It's certainly not to reopen the Strait of Hormuz at this point. We've tried that for five months with no success. Iran still has a plethora of missiles and drones. They still have divers with limpet mines. They still have fast boats. They still have mines that can be released from boats.
The only purpose that the intentional targeting of bridges and power plants inside of Iran would serve is to make the innocent Iranian civilians suffer. They're not going to rise up and topple the regime. We're not going to be able to reopen the Strait of Hormuz by pursuing this strategy.
This is only about making civilians suffer.
This is why Norman Finkelstein argues that Israel's whole society, not just its present government, bears responsibility for Gaza. Netanyahu didn't want to let it be known that he'd reluctantly agreed to let in some aid because not starving Gaza was unpopular.
