Americans invented a word for their corruption so that it wouldn't sound like corruption.

They called it lobbying.

In most of the world, if a corporation hands a politician money and the politician then votes in that corporation's interest, we have a name for that.

The name is bribery.

The person goes to prison, or is supposed to, or at least has to conduct the transaction in a parking garage at midnight with an envelope.

In America, the transaction happens in broad daylight. It is filed with the Federal Election Commission. It is legal. It is protected, since 2010, by a Supreme Court ruling that defined the exchange of money for political access as free speech.

They looked at bribery and called it speech.

They looked at corruption and called it democracy.

And then they sent ambassadors to other countries to lecture those governments about transparency and rule of law.

The audacity is not incidental to the system.

Israeli soldiers torture a one-year-old child in Gaza, including burning his leg with a cigarette and inserting a nail into his leg, according to a TRT report, to pressure his father to make confessions.

These are the pants of the child, Jawad Abu Nasser, who was totured in Gaza by Israeli soldiers, a small piece of fabric that stands as powerful evidence of the crime.

They bear traces of his blood, reflecting the abuse he endured. A visible hole can also be seen, indicating the insertion of a sharp object, resembling a metal rod, into his foot, with a clear exit point through both the foot and the fabric.

The evidence does not end there; there are also marks that appear to be burns, likely caused by cigarettes being extinguished on them.

Chinese guerrilla fighter Cheng Benhua before execution by the Japanese, 1938...

In 1938, as Japan advanced across China, thousands of ordinary citizens joined partisan units to resist occupation. Cheng, reportedly in her early twenties, fought alongside the Eighth Route Army in Anhui Province. When captured, she refused to give information about her comrades.

Her final moments, defiant and unflinching, were photographed by her captors, an image meant to intimidate but which instead became a symbol of courage. The photo, which shows her calm and unflinching in the face of death, is the primary reason she is remembered today. 

The Second Sino-Japanese War was one of history’s most brutal conflicts, marked by atrocities such as the Nanjing Massacre. Against that backdrop, Cheng’s calm defiance embodies the quiet heroism of countless unnamed resisters whose sacrifice fueled China’s eventual victory.

Cheng Benhua was later honored as a martyr by the People’s Republic of China, and her story is taught in Chinese schools as an emblem of patriotism and female resistance.

Yes, China emits more CO₂ overall, but that’s because it manufactures goods for the entire world, including Europe and the US. Nearly one-third of China’s emissions come from products exported to Western markets.

Per person, China’s CO₂ emissions are less than half of America’s and close to the EU average. And while the West outsourced its heavy industry, China built the factories, took the pollution and is now leading global clean-energy investment, accounting for over 60% of global solar manufacturing and 80% of EV battery production.

China is also the world’s largest investor in renewable energy, generating more wind and solar power than any other nation. It’s on track to have over 80% of its energy growth come from renewables by 2030, with a goal to reach 1,200 GW of solar and wind capacity by that year, a target it’s already close to achieving five years ahead of schedule.

Europe’s problem isn’t China. It’s the decades-long decision to offshore production for cheap labour, then blame the country that actually builds the world’s infrastructure.

If you want lower emissions and jobs at home, rebuild manufacturing sustainably instead of pointing fingers.
