Another example of Netanyahu doing what he does best: avoiding responsibility. His latest claim is that if he had been woken up at 4 or 5 a.m. on October 7, he would have made decisions that could have prevented the Hamas invasion. Why wasn’t he woken? Because, he suggests, the security chiefs knew he would force them to act and they didn’t want that.

There are a few problems with this argument. First, it is highly unlikely that Netanyahu would have done what he now claims. Had he been woken, he would have heard from IDF Chief of Staff Herzi Halevi, Shin Bet Director Ronen Bar and Military Intelligence chief Aharon Haliva. All three would have given him essentially the same assessment they themselves mistakenly believed: Hamas was probably not preparing for a major attack, and even if something happened, it would likely be limited in scope.

With every senior security official giving him the same assessment, does anyone seriously believe Netanyahu would have ordered Israel to launch an offensive against Hamas at 4 or 5 in the morning?

Far more likely, he would have told them to remain vigilant, continue monitoring the situation and reconvene in a few hours.

That, essentially, is the mistake that was made, and what @amirbohbot and I describe in "While Israel Slept". It was a catastrophic mistake, and the country paid an unbearable price for it.

But Netanyahu’s effort now is to portray October 7 as solely their mistake: a tactical intelligence failure that had nothing to do with him, his policies or the strategy he pursued for years - containing Hamas, allowing Qatari money into Gaza and repeatedly choosing not to send in the IDF to remove Hamas from power.

Keeping the debate focused on the tactical failures of that night serves him politically. It keeps the spotlight away from the larger strategic and political decisions that he had made.

The second problem is even more fundamental: this is a terrible illustration of leadership. Leadership is supposed to mean accountability and understanding that subordinates can make terrible mistakes, but ultimately the buck stops with the person at the top.

Sometimes I wonder what would have happened politically had he chosen a different path after October 7. What if he had gone to funerals of the victims and shiva houses? What if he had stood before the Israeli public and said simply: I failed. What if he had publicly shown grief for the 1,200 people massacred on his watch and accepted even a measure of responsibility?

Perhaps politically it would have helped him. Perhaps showing compassion and accountability would have brought back some of the Israelis who have turned away from him.

It is an interesting thought experiment, but that is all it is. Netanyahu’s political MO has long been clear: never accept responsibility, never admit failure and, above all, never say sorry.

This is not about politics. It's about truth, accountability and survival, all of which I hope will lead to thriving for Israel and the Jewish People. 

The men responsible for Israel's strategy leading up to and since October 7th are beginning US speaking tours. That's fine; a broad array of voices should be heard respectfully within the Jewish community. Here are six questions you may consider asking these men (one for each of the six Israeli hostages executed in Gaza and buried two years ago today on the Gregorian calendar):

1) Do you stand by your decision to fund and strengthen Hamas for years prior to October 7, 2023?
2) Do you think the 46 hostages who went into Gaza alive and were executed there should count in your claim that you successfully brought home all the hostages?
3) Hostage families consistently warned that every moment in captivity carried a risk of the hostages being executed, yet they were told that would not happen because the hostages were a valuable asset.  What drove this miscalculation?
4) Israel repeatedly refused world leaders' requests for a Day After Plan. Why? 
5) If President Trump had not imposed a hostage release and ceasefire deal on Israel and Hamas, would hostages still be in captivity?  
6) Israel has a clear State Commissions of Inquiry Law, 1968, which provides the framework for such commissions. It has been employed 20 times, yet the current Israeli government refuses broad calls for a State Commission of Inquiry into the greatest disaster in the country's history. Why?

Let's not allow key questions surrounding the events of October 7th to be politicized. We all benefit from truth and accountability.

לפני שנתיים, בשעה הזו בערך, התחילו להתרוצץ שמועות על משהו נורא ברצועת עזה, על קבוצת חטופים שנמצאו מתים במנהרה, וטרם פורסמו השמות שלהם.
השמועות האלה היו מדאיגות מאד. דאגתי לחבר שלנו עמרי מירן, לצחי עידן ז"ל, לתצפיתניות והשריונרים של מוצב נחל עוז, לאחים ברמן מכפר עזה, כולם עדיין היו בידי האויב באותו זמן.
לא ידעתי שבעצם צריך לדאוג להירש גולדברג-פולין, ועוד חמישה חטופים שהיו יחד איתו במנהרה ברפיח.
באותו ערב עוד התכבתי עם ג'ון, אבא שלו, על המשא ומתן הדמיוני לשחרור החטופים שכאילו התנהל באותם ימים.
לא זכיתי להכיר את הירש, אבל הכרתי את המשפחה דרך אחותו המקסימה ליבי, שהייתה חניכה שלי במכינה קדם-צבאית בעוטף עזה. אחרי 7/10 היא יצרה קשר, וחיברה אותי להורים המדהימים שלה, שהובילו מאבק בינלאומי אדיר למען הירש וכל החטופים, מאבק נגד הזמן ונגד הרוע האנושי, מאבק למען הצלת חיים ונגד גרירת המלחמה לנצח-נצחים עד "הניצחון המוחלט" שלא יגיע ולא הגיע.
ב-21.08.2024, עשרה ימים קודם לכן, נשארתי ער עד אמצע הלילה כדי לצפות בנאום של ג'ון ורייצ'ל בוועידה הדמוקרטית בארה"ב, נאום עוצמתי שלא הותיר עין אחת יבשה באולם. כתבתי לג'ון כמה מילים לחיזוק וקבענו להיפגש כשהם יחזרו לארץ.
בצאת אותה שבת ארורה, שבוע וחצי אחרי הנאום שלהם בארה"ב, ג'ון שלח לי מאמר כלשהו בנושא המשא-ומתן לעסקת החטופים. כתבתי מה דעתי והחלפנו עוד כמה הודעות. הוא היה נחוש, אופטימי, מסרב לוותר, כמו בכל השיחות איתו.
לכן, כשהתחיל גל השמועות ואפילו היו אנשים חסרי אחריות וחסרי מצפון באפליקציית השטן טלגרם, שהפיצו שמות (חלקם התבררו אחר-כך כלא נכונים), לא חשבתי על הירש, האזרח האמריקאי, שההורים שלו הפכו בעל-כורחם לפנים הבינלאומיות של מאבק החטופים.
ובכל זאת השמועות הפכו עקשניות יותר, והלילה הלך והפך קודר יותר. יום למחרת היה 1 בספטמבר, יום מרגש, יום של תחילת שנת הלימודים, התחלה חדשה, אבל איך אפשר לחגוג כזה דבר במציאות בה שישה אנשים צעירים, שנחטפו ע"י ארגון טרור והצליחו לשרוד בתנאים בלתי-אפשריים במנהרות הזוועה של חמאס במשך עשרה חודשים, בסופו של דבר נרצחים אחרי תקופה ארוכה של התעללות והרעבה, כישלון כל-כך קולוסלי שאי-אפשר בכלל להתחיל להבין אותו?
בשעה שש בבוקר, אחרי שהכל כבר "הותר לפרסום", כתבתי לג'ון את המילה היחידה שיכולתי להעלות על דעתי: סליחה. לא צריך היה להוסיף שום דבר מעבר לזה.
שנתיים אחר-כך, זו המילה שמדינת ישראל חייבת למשפחות של כל 46 החטופים שנלקחו לעזה בחיים, ואפשר וצריך היה להחזיר אותם בחיים, אבל הם חזרו בארונות. סליחה שלא הצלחנו.
ובמקום להגיד את המילה האחת הזו, סליחה, ואחר-כך לשתוק ולהתבייש, יש פוליטיקאים ציניים וחסרי בושה, שגם היום, אפילו הערב הזה ממש באירוע גאלה ראוותני בארה"ב, ממשיכים להגיד שהם "החזירו" את "כל החטופים".
מחר 1 בספטמבר, יום מרגש, יום של שמחה בלב, הבת הבכורה שלי מתחילה כיתה א' עם החברים שלה בנחל עוז, אחותה הקטנה עולה לגן של הקיבוץ, ואנחנו נחגוג מחר. אבל אני לא שוכח לעולם את ה-31.08, כמו שאני לא שוכח את 7/10, ואני עדיין מחכה שהאנשים שבאמת צריכים, יבקשו כבר סליחה.

בנושא הזה אני לא אוותר. בכל פעם שאחד מחברי הממשלה הזאת לוקח קרדיט על החזרת כל החטופים הביתה, זה כמו לחפור בפצע פתוח. די!
אמרתי זאת בעבר ואומר זאת שוב: החזרת 46 גופות של אנשים שנכנסו לשבי בחיים וחזרו בשקיות אינה דבר שראוי לקבל עליו קרדיט. 46 הנשמות הקדושות הללו הן 46 אותות של בושה. לגבי חטופים שהוחזקו 300/400/500+ ימים בשבי, בהמתנה שיחזירו אותם הביתה - רק הם יכולים להחליט אם לממשלה הזאת מגיע קרדיט על החזרתם.

On this issue I will not give up. It is digging into an open wound every time a member of this government takes credit for bringing home all the hostages. STOP!
I've said before and I'll say again: bringing home 46 bodies who went into captivity alive and came home in bags is not worthy of credit. These 46 holy souls are 46 badges of shame. As for the hostages who were held for 300/400/500+ days in captivity waiting to be brought home, only they can decide whether this government deserves credit for their return.
