STEEL CUTTING OF SECOND NEXT GENERATION MISSILE VESSEL (NGMV) FOR INDIAN NAVY AT COCHIN SHIPYARD LIMITED, KOCHI @cslcochin @IN_HQSNC @DefencePROkochi @indiannavy

‘Steel Cutting’ ceremony of the second ship of the Next Generation Missile Vessel (NGMV) project was held at Cochin Shipyard Limited (CSL), Kochi on 17 Sep 2026, with RAdm Kapil Mehta, Assistant Controller of Warship Production & Acquisition as the Chief Guest. Other senior officials from the Indian Navy and CSL were also present for the occasion.

Contract for construction of NGMVs was concluded with CSL in March 2023. The NGMVs are planned to be installed with state-of-the-art weapon and sensors, which would significantly enhance the combat capabilities of the Indian Navy as a ‘Future Ready and Combat Ready Force’. The construction of the ships reinforces India’s commitment to build a strong and modern Navy, capable of operating in the complex maritime environment of the Indian Ocean Region.

Further, all the major role defining equipment have been indigenously developed and manufactured, underscoring the Nation’s prowess and are in consonance with GoI initiative of ‘AatmanirbharBharat’ ‘Makeinindia’ and ‘MakefortheWorld’.

DELIVERY OF SAMARTHAK – THE FIRST INDIGENOUS MULTI-PURPOSE VESSEL*

Samarthak, the first Multi-Purpose Vessel (MPV), built by Larsen & Toubro Ltd (L&T), Kattupalli,was delivered to the Indian Navy on 27 Aug 2026.

The ship comprises *over 75 percent indigenous content* and has been conceived as a versatile trial and evaluation platform. Further, the ship is engineered to perform maritime surveillance and reconnaissance, Offshore patrolling and support Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief operations, when required.

The ship has been aptly named ‘Samarthak’, meaning *‘The Proponent’.* The name signifies the ship’s intended role as *a dependable enabler of multiple missions.* True to its designation, _Samarthak_ is not limited to one specific task but is *engineered to support a wide spectrum of activities,* thereby embodying the concept of a multi-purpose vessel.

The delivery of _Samarthak_ is yet another milestone in the Indian Navy’s indigenous shipbuilding journey and a reaffirmation of the Government’s vision of _Aatmanirbhar Bharat._ The ship stands as a testament in India’s pursuit towards self-sustaining domestic defence industrial ecosystem.
