This knee-jerk opposition to solar because it's "intermittent" is outdated.
Yesterday evening in California, batteries provided 36% of the power for the grid as the sun went down.
We still need other sources like geothermal & nuclear too, but solar should be part of the mix.
Don't worry about citizen pushback. I'm telling you, they're stupid. All I have to do is use their own taxpayer dollars to buy every billboard in the state and fill them with messaging about how opposing data centers is unkind.
A group of Box Elder County residents filed two applications for a referendum challenging the construction of the Stratos-MIDA data center in the county.

As drought conditions intensify across Utah, Salt Lake City officials have stepped up efforts to reduce water consumption and urged residents to do the same.

@boneherguy@UtahDemocrats Its drying up is a huge ecological disaster that affects the entire valley. I'm not sure what you mean by uninhabitable. There is a lot of stuff that actually DOES live there. Even if there wasn't we shouldn't be making our lake dry up.
The Great Salt Lake is dying. A 9-gigawatt gas-powered data center on its shore will finish the job. This isn't a zoning issue. It's a question of whether rural communities get to protect their land, water, and air, or get steamrolled by outside money.
It's time we remind them who they answer to. Your voice matters - pack that room.
A significant chunk of the waste is going to blow south into the cities.
This is like if we already have a small engine running in a closed garage with an open window and decided to turn on a giant diesel engine at the same time.
Before anyone says "oh boy here comes the tree huggers" it's important to mention:
Even if you stupidly think climate change isn't real, you cannot deny that using natural gas to generate electricity creates waste gas as a biproduct.
We live in a fishbowl! We're gunna suffocate!
It's not enough that a facility like this creates its own electricity... you're talking about doubling Utah's energy capacity by building new natural gas generation, which is a potent climate/air quality polluter.

Utah Keep pushing back. Keep in mind that the closed loop narrative makes one think people are paid to force a message.
Closed loop cooling systems need evaporative cooling, which means a need for continuous outside water. Utah is the 2nd driest state. We have no water to give.
A Utah construction company says it is owed $165,000 for work done on the home of a Republican state lawmaker, Rep. Trevor Lee https://t.co/atFZ6p65H8 #utpol
