🥁 How do we move from intention to impact?
In academia, building inclusive work cultures requires more than statements of support — it needs concrete action.
Join us for Workshop nr 2 in the ALBA-IBRO From Declaration to Action series and gain practical, scalable tools to foster belonging in your lab, department, or institution.

What happens to the brain’s body map when a body-part is removed?
Scanning patients before and up to 5 yrs after undergoing an arm amputation, we discovered the brain’s body map is strikingly preserved despite amputation

A new @PNASNews paper by Laurent Koessler al. is foundational for the field of transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS). https://t.co/BxmbH95xJh
The paper adds to literature showing that small electric fields (<0.5 V/m) can produce acute and lasting changes in neuronal function. As I see it, this paper bridges decades of animal research with human protocols. Dozens of DC stimulation studies in brain slices are based around modulating repeated evoked response (eg. https://t.co/iMKhvpjHQk). This is inherently "functional targeting" since the ongoing (evoked) activity is specifically modulated. Laurent KOESSLER show the analog in humans alongside exhaustive controls and analysis.
Koessler et al use HD-tDCS, though not an explicitly focalized montage. Still, results may not have been so conclusive used sponge-pad electrodes.
The authors demonstrate neuromodulation at conventional (2 mA) intensities but note electric fields increase linearity with applied current- further enhancing outcomes. I only disagree with the implication there is evidence for increased risk (eg. 4 mA).
Summary: Koessler et al. meaningfully add to the literature that 2 mA (~0.5 V/m) tDCS modulate brain activity in a targeted manner.
Congratulations to Marie-Constance Corsi recipient of this year’s Early Career Award! Dr. Corsi's innovative work in the #BCI field is already making a big impact.

1/11 How does our brain's hierarchical organization impact its response to stimulation? We found striking differences between "high-order" networks (involved in complex cognition) vs "low-order" networks (handling sensory/motor functions) @NatureComms
