Since the fall of autocrat Sheikh Hasina, there is an increase of inflammatory media commentary and political rhetoric against Bangladesh coming from certain Indian quarters. There is now an echo chamber filled with misinformation, fuelling persistent anti-Bangladesh sentiment. The latest attack on the Bangladeshi consulate in Agartala highlights the destabilising effects of disinformation, which only creates division and discord among neighbours.

International stakeholders must acknowledge that a destabilised Bangladesh, with near about 200 million people, is not in the interest of any country. It is crucial to objectively understand what led to Hasina's ouster, what has been happening in Bangladesh since she fled to India, and why it’s imperative to forge people-to-people ties between Bangladesh and India, beyond any particular person or political party.

Bangladesh faces many challenges, but we have largely been, and will remain, a land of religious harmony and territorial sovereignty, where the rights and freedoms of every citizen are protected, irrespective of race, caste, and religion. I urge my fellow Bangladeshis to show utmost restraint and not fall prey to any provocation.

Sheikh Hasina ruthlessly employs full force of the state apparatus to cling to power, orchestrating violence through acts of murder, vandalism, arson, and cocktail bombs. The violent Awami League regime distorts the narrative to legitimize repression, unjustly framing BNP leaders with a series of fabricated accusations.

Following the recent grand rally of BNP, police filed numerous cases against thousands of opposition figures. The creation of an illusory accused list, including our late leaders Sanaullah Miah and Nasir Rahman, who respectively died over three years and one year ago, exposes the depth of this judicial deceit.

Such erosion of democracy, where deceased and incarcerated BNP leaders encounter fictional and indiscriminate charges, presents a grim portrayal of our nation’s struggle against a pervasive clampdown on rightful dissent.

Analysts say that Hasina’s government now has the judiciary and the police fully under its control, and has weaponised them in her fight against the opposition. The ongoing violence orchestrated by the Sheikh Hasina regime, which has claimed yet another victim in the struggle for fair wages for garment workers, represents a sinister effort to suppress rightful demands. Since the BNP grand rally on 28 October, 17 lives have been lost due to the human rights violations of AL and its politicized law enforcement agencies.

I vehemently condemn these killings, targeting innocent police, journalists, workers, and BNP activists. This brutality, employed as a repressive tactic to maintain power and silence dissenting voices, cannot go unanswered. We urgently demand an immediate halt to the thousands of arrests made each passing day. We will ensure justice prevails in the democratic and inclusive Bangladesh we strive to rebuild, and hold the perpetrators accountable.
