77000 CE: Hovering around 300 at 3:15, it was instantly wiped out to zero.

The market moved with such predatory velocity that retail traders were completely trapped; it was impossible to extract money whether you were buying or selling options.

Pakistan shot down an Indian MiG-21 over Kargil on May 27 1999. The pilot ejected safely. Pakistan executed him anyway.

That is not a claim. That is what the evidence showed when his body came home.

Here is what happened that day from the beginning.

The Batalik sector was Pakistan's most critical nerve centre for the Kargil incursion. Muntho Dhalo was where their supply chain for all Batalik operations ran through. On May 27 Indian Air Force MiG-27s and MiG-23s were sent to hit it before Pakistan could resupply their positions.

Flight Lieutenant Nachiketa was on the mission. He spotted the target through smoke and debris, dived sharply, fired his rockets, came around again and opened his 30mm cannon. As he pulled up the engine shuddered and flamed out. Speed already below 500 kmph. Restart impossible. Valley walls closing around him with nowhere to go.

He called out to his leader. Mando. Nachi ejecting.

He pulled the handle and landed in knee-deep snow. Pakistani soldiers were waiting.

Back at Srinagar, Squadron Leader Ajay Ahuja and Flying Officer Gautham Reddy launched in their MiG-21s the moment news of the ejection reached base. Reddy was ordered back as fuel ran low. Ahuja stayed.

He descended in tight circles over hostile territory searching for his downed colleague. He had entered the kill zone of enemy shoulder-fired surface-to-air missiles. A missile locked on and struck his aircraft. He transmitted calmly. Suspecting missile hit. Engine parameters normal.

Then the engine flamed out.

His final transmission gave his position. Flameout. Entering the valley.

Then silence.

He ejected safely.

He was not safe.

Pakistani forces captured Ajay Ahuja alive after his ejection. When his body was returned to India the truth was written on it in two rounds fired at close range. One in the chest. One in the head.

He was not killed in combat. He was executed after capture.

Nachiketa survived captivity and came home. He is alive today because Ajay Ahuja chose to stay in the kill zone for a colleague he had flown into danger to find.

Ahuja did not have to go back. No order required him to descend into that valley. He chose to.

Pakistan took his life. But they could not take what his choice meant.

Twenty six years later it still means the same thing.

Some men fly toward the danger when everyone else is flying away.

Ajay Ahuja was one of them.
