@AislingO_Connor @uccsocialwork Great to see academic research on the experiences and concerns of such a sadly-neglected and poorly recognised group. Thank you for caring, Aisling! 💐

This #CarersWeek I have 2 wishes for #FamilyCarers:
1. Recognition of our work in the form of a non-means-tested Carer’s Allowance and pension entitlement.
2. Well-developed Personal Assistance/Care Support services to “share the care”, with less over-reliance on family members.
My latest piece. This for #CarersWeek or as many of us call it, #RealCarersWeek
A view of what being a #carer is really like. Some ideas for NGOs and politicians for the week before the media campaign and the platitudes begin.

Today our wheelchair warrior turns 11. She has done so much in her short life one that was filled with lots of “she won’t be able to do” when she started her journey! How she has proved them wrong! We had to keep the biggest surprise from her for so long! #puppylove#Eleven 💝
In Ireland Carer’s Allowance is means-tested. It’s an income support for low-income families only, not a recognition of caring work. Hence many full-time carers receive zero weekly allowance. Wishing our fellow carers in the UK success with your campaign for improved supports.
Millions of unpaid carers have stepped up during the pandemic, but are being asked to get by on £67.70 a week.
This is unacceptable, and we need an ambitious National Carers Strategy to give carers the support they deserve.

The @CommonsHealth Select Committee has today released their first report on the Government's White Paper for health and care. We’re delighted they’ve taken on board the key points in @CarersUK’s evidence submission and that the views of carers are reflected in their response.
For some carers, having to communicate with services that do not understand can make life more stressful and difficult. Our new blueprint outlines how companies and services can help carers manage. Read more here: https://t.co/PavkdhQEQc
Read our response to the Queen's Speech and the lack of concrete measures from the Government on social care reform. Leaving millions of families with no choice but to take on more and more care for their older or disabled relatives. https://t.co/qnayeahoQp
Thank you to @frances_black for availing of the opportunity presented by yesterday’s #Seanad motion on Carers, to propose amendments seeking vital Personal Assistance supports for disabled people. Although they were defeated, I hope the campaign for PA Services will continue. 🙏
Appreciate the goodwill towards Family Carers expressed in the #Seanad today and looking forward to progress eg. on carers’ pensions. Listening to @FrankFeighan someone might think that carers receive great support - Carer’s Allowance/Benefit, Domiciliary Care Allowance ...
