It is admirable to watch how the changing of the guard works seamlessly at @sequoiacap@jimgoetz did it in 2017 and now @roelofbotha passes it on to the next generation of stewards. Roelof has been consistent about how one of his tasks as the chief Steward was to ensure a continuation of the tradition and a seamless transition. Congrats on all you have achieved and congrats to the new leaders.

Today is #EarthDay, when we should take a moment to reflect how important the #earth is in taking care of us and how important it is for us to take care of it.
While doing that, please remember that the #ocean is the largest part of the earth and our ecosystem, more than twice the size of all land combined.

One of the hardest things for people to do is to objectively look down on themselves within their circumstances (i.e., their machine) so that they can act as the machine's designer and manager.
Most people remain stuck in the perspective of being a worker within the machine. If you can recognize the differences between those roles and that it is much more important that you are a good designer/manager of your life than a good worker in it, you will be on the right path.
To be successful, the "designer/manager you" has to be objective about what the "worker you" is really like, not believing in him more than he deserves, or putting him in jobs he shouldn't be in. Instead of having this strategic perspective, most people operate emotionally and in the moment; their lives are a series of undirected emotional experiences, going from one thing to the next. If you want to look back on your life and feel you've achieved what you wanted to, you can't operate that way. #principleoftheday
HubSpot's a pretty big company (~8,000 people) but we've managed to avoid this death spiral.
Things that have helped:
1) Small teams with high autonomy
2) Hold regular "science fairs" where teams show off what they *shipped*
3) Closely connect our product team to customers, so they can hear needs first hand
4) Have a culture that prioritizes *value* delivered to the customer
5) Have founders that use the product regularly and are perpetually impatient. 😀
