We have started an ambitious restoration mission to save Kariyachalli Island in the Gulf of Mannar in Tamil Nadu.The island has lost 71% of its land from 20.85 ha in 1969 to just 5.47 ha by 2018 and there is a threat that it could disappear by 2036. Funded by GOTN and the World Bank this Rs 50 Crore project also aims to uplift local communities by improving their livelihood. Backed by technical support of IIT Madras and SDMRI, we are deploying 8,500 artificial reef modules to fight erosion, boost sediment build-up, and revive marine life especially Dugongs.
