As the tolled Silvertown Tunnel opens today, 80,000 Blackwall Tunnel users every day will be forced to pay a toll to use the crossing they've used for decades for free. Why? Because they're being asked to clean up the mess that the Mayor & TfL have created with Silvertown 🧵1/n
“We hope these local councils will now look at cheaper and more sustainable ways of improving transport in local communities, such as investing in more and cheaper buses, and safe and attractive walking and cycling routes.” @TransportActio2 👏🏽

@HeidyKhlaaf All these x-risk types should be looking at corporate capitalism instead. Corporations act a lot like out-of-control agents (with a reward function based on shareholder value). But they have far more power. https://t.co/up13RXRg8r
1196 people have now signed our petition for action on the dangerous Tulse Hill gyratory to the @MayorofLondon which will be lodged by @LabourMarina via the London Assembly. Please add your name here - https://t.co/iutPuyP3gd
Many people are understandably skeptical of dramatic claims about existential risk or AI takeover (let alone specific probability estimates) for various reasons.
But delaying action until we settle disagreements over the scope and severity of AI risks under high uncertainty seems counterproductive as long as the ~ same initial mitigation measures are justified under competing risk assessments.
If you notice early signs of a leaky pipe in your home, you can have a debate about whether it’s likely to damage a wall, ruin a room, or flood the whole house. You can also debate what caused it: maybe the contractor did a shoddy job installing the sink, maybe the pipes are being pushed past their limits. But you should probably start by containing the leak and calling a plumber to investigate (substitute a swarm of termites for the leak if you prefer, and add speculation about the "goals" of the swarm). This doesn't settle which repairs you should do, who should pay for them, who should take the blame, etc., but at least it's a step toward preventing further damage.
@FCDOGovUK@Ed_Miliband@ukinisrael@UKinJerusalem The two state solution has been dead in the water for decades; Israel has made sure of that. The red line should be equal rights (of safety, of property and land ownership, of movement, of democratic representation) for everyone in Palestine and Israel.
@DanielBShapiro Hamas exists only because of the occupation. Partly due to Netanyahu's strategy of ensuring that Palestinians are never politically united. Partly because the PA's collusion with Israel has clearly failed (as we see with the continued construction of settlements in the West Bank)
@NickFoxNYT This article comes very close to blaming Hamas for the genocidal decisions of the Israeli govt and the US govt that supports them. Which those govts are entirely responsible for.
@NickFoxNYT Where Palestinian authorities fight the occupation, the occupation expands by military means (as in Gaza). Where they collude, the occupation expands by legal/paramilitary means (as in the West Bank now). The article fails to construct the vital context of the no-win situation.
@KenRoth And US financial support for the occupation. Fighting back against occupation does not make the group fighting responsible for the decisions of the occupier to engage in genocide, or of the US to support it.
@KenRoth Hamas or the PA, there is no win. If Palestinians resist occupation with violence, the occupation expands by military means, as in Gaza. If Palestinians do not resist the occupation, it expands by legal/paramilitary means, as in the West Bank. The problem is the occupation.
@afalkhatib Ahmed, it's very simple. If Palestinians resist occupation with violent means, the occupation expands with military means (as in Gaza). If they don't resist occupation, the occupation expands with legal/paramilitary means (as in the West Bank). The occupation is the problem.
@MikeTappTweets This is where you reap exactly what you sowed, Mike. If you follow reform to the right on immigration, you open the Overton window to masked racist vigilantes.
