What a year for the #centromere - It even rhymes! 2025 we celebrated 40 years since Bill Earnshaw's discovery of our favorite histone, CENP-A, a new era of centromere biology. Special Issue out now - with @BungoAkiyoshi @tatsuofukagawa1@RachelONeill

📢 Big year for human genomics from the @GiuntaLab
🧬 RPE1 genome released (Sept)
📍 Today: Matched-reference pinpoints the kinetochore on every human chromosome & haplotype
The power of isogenomic! @SapienzaRoma@NaturePortfolio@ERC_Research

Being HOL is more than running all day between meetings, troubleshooting, endeless writing of grants/manuscripts/etc. It requires sharing discoveries that took years, and are meaningful if of use to the broader scientific community. Thanks to our HPC for the prompt & support💻🧬💪

@GiuntaLab, led by Prof. @Simona_Giunta, publishes two landmark studies: the first diploid RPE-1 reference genome and a new framework for high-precision functional genomics using matched reads–reference mapping.

@HorizonsMolBio Thanks so much to all the students for putting together such a phenomenal meeting - not only great science but also great fun! Thank you again for inviting me, till next time! 😊
Reference genome assembly of the human RPE-1 cell line finally out, available on the genome browser alongside historic HG. Unbelievably proud of this feat of the @GiuntaLab@SapienzaRoma@rockefelleruniv

@HorizonsMolBio Thanks to the PhD students of the International Max Planck Research School for Molecular Biology for thinking of me - The invitations from students are the most precious and humbling ones! Looking forward to a great meeting and talking about everything centromeres with you! 🧬
New preprint! We solve a mystery you didn't know existed. Mitotic cells lack new transcription but require ongoing translation. Interphase mRNA half life is only 2-4 hrs. So how do cells arrest in mitosis for hours without depleting their transcriptomes?

@itsmudaud That's a great point - Two key aspects contribute to centromere diversity: intact inheritance (different maternal & paternal haps) + rapid evolution/changes. But I agree, our work points to not being as different as they seem... Looking forward to see centromere parodoxes unfold!
@frangelelli@GiuntaLab Thank you, Francesco - with the whole @GiuntaLab we can't wait to have you & Hamza join our lab in the fall, and we are actively interviewing more candidates, so if anyone is interesting in the fascinating world of human centromeres, please do reach out! 🧬https://t.co/zfOhqwSufa
@LabVincenzo@LucaFava14@GiuntaLab Thank you, means a lot coming from you - please, come visit us if you are ever in Rome, and always open to collaborations!
🚨 Hot off the press!!! Wanted to share this to celebrate the momentous achievement from the @GiuntaLab and for the human centromere / genomics communities as a whole... more posts to come next week but for now, happy Fourth & happy reading ❤️🧬💻 https://t.co/PGDRKwqQr9
Just to add that our University Hospital @PoliclinicoUmb1 hosting childhood cancer patients from Gaza & other war zones, also kids needing complex prosthetics interventions. In a world that lost it, proud to be part of an institution showing our #Humanity https://t.co/3mBeV5wdE9
Very proud of my University @SapienzaRoma for a series of interventions for Palestine, Ukraine, students & professors in war zones, including fellowships and ad hoc positions. Please reach out to me personally if you are an eligible candidate✌️ ☮️ 🧬 (https://t.co/CNpUUI1URL)

Phenomenonal talks at the #ESHG2025 this year! Can't wait to share our new data - now in press - from the @GiuntaLab tomorrow morning, so stay tuned! 🧬 Great to have such a large international conference at home 🇮🇹 the perfect science/weather/people/food combo! @eshgsociety
Like astronauts exploring a planet, no stone is left unturned in the @GiuntaLab when it comes to human DNA 🧬Our computational simulations show that centromere sequences are intrinsically prone to complex and unstable secondary structures correlated with chromosome missegregation
🚨 New from Chittoor & @Simona_Giunta
📰Comparative analysis of predicted DNA secondary structures infers complex human centromere topology

On this note, Chromosoma Editors @BungoAkiyoshi @Simona_Giunta@tatsuofukagawa1 have something *BIG*, something collaborative and something special cooking with #centromere experts! Tic Toc Tic Toc, stay tuned! (Clues: #Chromosoma circa 1985)
@jallepap @MSKCancerCenter Thank you, Prasad @jallepap for organizing a fantastic day at @MSKCancerCenter, meeting with over 12 PIs, lunch with motivated students and great engagement during the talk - cherry on the cake, sampling Belgian beers + delicious dinner! Days like this make science extra special!
