If you haven't read a biography on Alexander the Great yet... you are TWEAKING. This guy literally just marched East and conquered everyone and anything in his way. No strategy. Just pure war. He used catapults when no one use catapults in war. He built bridges where no one was able to build bridges. He would march at the frontlines with his army fighting hand to hand combat. He dreamed of becoming godlike like Heracles and Achilles. He thought about his named being remembered for a thousand years. His biography is probably one of the most inspiring things a man can read.
LOTR might genuinely be one of the greatest things humans have ever put on a screen and Iâm not even exaggerating. You can watch it as a kid and think itâs about hobbits and swords and this terrifying ring. Then you watch it as an adult and realize itâs basically about everything that actually matters.
Power corrupts people and evil usually starts really small..Good people can be tempted and courage isnât about being fearless. Friendship can literally carry you when you canât carry yourself anymore. The smallest person in the room can change the course of history. You do the right thing not because you know youâre going to win, but because itâs the right thing to do.
Honestly⌠I think it should be mandatory viewing for kids at some point. Not just âwatch the movieâ but actually dissect it. Why does Boromir fail? Why can Sam resist what other people canât? Why does Frodo show Gollum mercy? Why is Aragorn a good leader when he spends half the story reluctant to have power? What happens when someone becomes consumed by resentment, fear, or the desire to control other people? Then make kids apply those questions to their own lives. Friendship, temptation, loyalty, courage, responsibility, choosing who you want to be when nobody is forcing you to choose correctly. There are probably more useful lessons about becoming a decent human being buried in those movies than in half the stuff we make kids memorize in schoolâŚand those are learnings and lessons that would stick and could carry you through all of life.
My favorite part is that the heroes arenât these invincible characters either. Theyâre tired, scared, tempted, and completely outmatched. Half the time they have no idea what theyâre doing but they just keep goingâŚ.
Then somehow Peter Jackson took ALL of THAT and made three epic movies at the same time, filled them with real sets, real landscapes, thousands of extras, incredible music,⌠and made something that still looks better than movies being made with $200M budgets 25 years later.
I really donât think weâll ever get another thing like it.
Genuinely no doubt in my mind that if Arsenal didnât snap this guy up after the Euros
He wouldâve landed at Madrid and been recognised as one of the worldâs best
Heâs everything a âgalacticoâ stands for
The fact Arsenal have two of them in their backline with SalibaâŚ
Insane
I find something strangely profound about how polar bears always have this look of boyish innocence to them no matter what the context is. Even covered in the blood of his prey, the bear looks like a silly little guy. Much to learn.
Always found this chart fascinating
Women increasingly dominate as platforms move towards appearance / social life / social proof
Men increasingly dominate as they move towards information / ideas / work
This is a disaster for the human race and Iâve really lost patience with the useless morons who canât see that. An AI video chat that passes for human has no necessary legitimate applications. It will be used to scam old people out of their life savings. Lonely, mentally vulnerable people are going to form romantic attachments to people who arenât real. Isolation will increase. Mental illness will skyrocket even more than it already has. Kids in grade school will have AI boyfriends and girlfriends. All of this will happen. And worse things we canât even conceive at this point. People are already forming unhealthy emotional attachments to text-based LLMs. Once thereâs an audio and visual component, itâs over. Millions of brains will be broken irreparably.
The benefits of this technology, whatever they are exactly, are so vastly outweighed by the societal catastrophe it will cause, and is already causing, that you canât even measure the two categories on the same scale. But at least this is the best thing that ever happened to third world scammers. So if youâre in that community, congratulations.
If you leave Germans alone with fields and rivers they'll automatically start building highly productive farms and factories like a baby beaver building a dam with toys. Theyre like ants they just have to work and build steel mills and machine shops and stuff they cant help it.
Relegating Man City would actually let them off lightly.
My punishment:
-35 points for their next FIVE Premier League seasons. And no Champions League qualification during that period, by any route.
The punishment is fixed. The consequences aren't.
Get 100 points? Congratulations, you've got 65. Enjoy the Europa League.
Have a normal City season? You're finishing mid-table.
Have a bad one? You're in a relegation fight.
Here's the best bit, if they DO get relegated, the clock stops.
They don't get to spend a year battering Championship teams, come straight back up and call the punishment served. They return to the Premier League and the -35 is sitting there waiting for them.
After a couple of years without title races or Champions League football, maybe players leave. Maybe recruitment gets harder. Maybe maintaining a '90-point team' gets harder too.
Five Premier League seasons.
No title race. No Champions League. No easy reset.
Just ÂŁ1bn worth of squad fighting for 10th.
Beautiful. #MCFC
đ¨ MAJOR BREAKING: Premier League confirm an independent Commission has found Manchester City GUILTY OF ALL CHARGES related to serious breaches of the Premier Leagueâs financial rules over a nine-season period, and the majority of charges in relation to its failure to co-operate with the Leagueâs investigation.
The club has the right to appeal the independent Commissionâs findings and has until Friday 2 October to exercise that right.
The Premier League Boardâs intention is that the full process (including any appeals and publication of relevant decisions) is concluded as soon as possible.
The independent Commission found that between Seasons 2009/10 and 2017/18:
- Manchester City arranged âshamâ contracts (which misrepresented the true agreement between the parties) with a number of its commercial partners, as well as relying on âshamâ agreements with others, to artificially inflate the clubâs revenues and reduce its costs
- The club filed misstated accounts and concealed the true state of its finances from its auditors and football regulators
- Manchester City was significantly in breach of both the Premier Leagueâs and UEFAâs spending limits
- During the Premier Leagueâs investigation, Manchester City committed multiple breaches of its duties of co-operation and utmost good faith towards the League (three of the four alleged breaches were upheld)
How do we explain to younger generations that short sleeve tshirt over a long sleeve used to be so popular they used to make fakes which were just long sleeve tees with different sleeves stitched in to look like it's layered
It takes sheer courage to procrastinate. You either have an insane amount of faith in your last-minute abilities, or you are simply unbothered by the consequences of inaction. Either way, youâve sure got some guts.
My coworker is like 70 pounds bigger than me and she said wow youâre hungry when I was eating breakfast I hate fat women they seethe whenever they see a skinny girl eating
itâs insanely fun when you find ppl who will endlessly riff with you about virtually anything.
like something stupid, profound, maybe something even offensive, a half baked idea, or just complete garbage. you just keep tossing thoughts back & forth forever. this is one of the most underrated forms of compatibility.
if you have friends like these it makes ordinary time feel unusually alive.
& if you have a relationship like this itâs even more valuable cuz most of life is thousands of random dinners, car rides, walks, errands, & nights on the couch. if the two of you can make basically anything entertaining to each other youâve solved a surprisingly large part of the problem.
