NASA field project aimed at investigating microphysics and precipitation for Atlantic Coast-threatening snowstorms. Account managed by University of Washington.
Project PI @McMurdieLynn gave a #AMS2024 hyperwall presentation showcasing IMPACTS.

Erin Potter, who teaches #Meteorology at #SUNYSchenectady, helps lead a team of @ualbany students who recently launched weather balloons from the UAlbany campus as part of a @NASA field campaign called IMPACTS re: snowstorms. https://t.co/zLQmObjpC9 #womenshistorymonth
The IMPACTS team flew their last ever flight on February 28 after three years, 18 weeks of flights, and copious data collected. Just during the 2023 deployment, the P-3 completed 19 flights, and traveled 32,928 miles over the course of 118.2 hours.
Got your head in the clouds? So do we! Follow along with us this week to learn more about the IMPACTS (Investigation of Microphysics and Precipitation for Atlantic Coast-Threatening Snowstorms) field campaign at @NASA_Wallops.
The winter storm is taking shape as we get ready for our *last* IMPACTS flight early in the morning. You can track what our aircraft are up to here:

…and to close out #IMPACTS2023! We’ll be drawing up flight plans and coordinating with @NWSEastern offices and universities to have a fleet of measurements from the air ✈️ and ground 🎈
A storm tracking across the Great Lakes Monday will redevelop off the New Jersey coast Monday night, bringing some snow to most of the Northeast to close out the month of February.
Atlanta news affiliate @FOX5Atlanta recently visited @DobbinsARB to get an inside scoop of ER-2 operations. Check out the video piece they made 👇

Summary of this week's mixed precip event @UAlbanyDAES from our MRR-2 radar, Parsivel distrometer, and @SnowIMPACTS soundings. They nicely highlight the p-type transitions. Credit to grad. student Massey Bartolini for the great plots: https://t.co/5Og5CfTY5v
Excited about today's @SnowIMPACTS flight because we're observing electrified snowbands which are not producing #lightning, but generating fields on the order of 100-200 V m-1. Key measurements for understanding how these systems charge up and also generate lots of snow. #mewx
Interesting things happen when mission scientists draw up pretend flight plans to support their favorite team #FlyEaglesFly
Tomorrow's actual flight plan will be off the VA/NC coast and near the Chesapeake Bay.
