#IBCA–#Kyrgyz Republic Big Cat Diplomacy: Strengthening Global Partnerships!

On the sidelines of #CBDCOP17 in Yerevan, #Armenia, officials of the International Big Cat Alliance (#IBCA) met H.E. Mr Almaz Musaev, Deputy Minister of Natural Resources, Ecology and Technical Supervision of the #Kyrgyz Republic, to explore avenues for international cooperation in #BigCat conservation.

Mr @SoumitraIfs, Director (Program), IBCA, highlighted the IBCA’s role in facilitating knowledge exchange, strengthening institutional partnerships, building conservation capacities, and mobilising resources to conserve the world’s seven major #BigCat species and their habitats. He also urged the Hon’ble Minister to consider the Kyrgyz Republic’s membership in IBCA, which could further strengthen international cooperation and collective efforts towards conserving the #SnowLeopard and its fragile mountain ecosystems.

Beyond the Peaks: Securing Snow Leopards, Mountain Ecosystems and Communities

The International Big Cat Alliance (IBCA) is convening a side event at CBD COP17 in Yerevan, Armenia, bringing together conservation partners and snow leopard range countries to strengthen collaborative action for snow leopards, mountain ecosystems and communities.

The event will focus on global conservation priorities, transboundary cooperation, ecological connectivity and coordinated action for snow leopard conservation.

At the #CBDCOP in Yerevan, Mr. @SoumitraIfs, Director (Program), #IBCA, highlighted India’s landscape-based approach to conservation, including legally backed Eco-Sensitive Zones around Protected Areas, wildlife corridors, and community participation in conservation.

Emphasising the importance of integrated landscapes, agroecology and human–wildlife coexistence, he underscored how inclusive, community-led approaches can strengthen #Biodiversity conservation while supporting sustainable livelihoods and socio-economic upliftment.

The participation of youth audiences in the side event reflected the growing interest and enthusiasm among young people for biodiversity conservation. Youth engagement is also a key priority identified by the CBD, recognising the importance of inclusive participation in advancing biodiversity conservation. Their engagement offers encouraging momentum for advancing Whole-of-Society approach and landscape-based conservation for strengthening global efforts to safeguard #BigCats and their habitats for the future.

#SnowLeopards transcend borders, making international cooperation essential to their long-term conservation.

Recognising #Mongolia’s leadership in snow leopard conservation, #IBCA participated in side event titled “Snow Leopard Conservation and How It Brings Countries Together” at the #Mongolian Pavilion during #CBDCOP17 on 20 October 2026.

Mr @SoumitraIfs, Director (Program), IBCA, highlighted IBCA’s role in advancing international cooperation, strengthening partnerships, and mobilising resources for snow leopard conservation.
He also held constructive discussions with the Mongolian delegation on collaborative conservation action to safeguard the elusive “Ghost of the Mountains” and its fragile habitats, building on Mongolia’s valued association as an esteemed Member Country of IBCA.
