#Ethiopia: Rusted screws, metal spikes and plastic rubbish: the horrific sexual violence used against #Tigray’s women
For two years, Tseneat carried her rape inside her. The agony never faded. It attacked her from the inside out. The remnants of the attack stayed in Tseneat’s womb – not as a memory or metaphor, but a set of physical objects:
Eight rusted screws. A steel pair of nail clippers. A note, written in ballpoint pen and wrapped in plastic.
“Sons of Eritrea, we are brave,” the note reads. “We have committed ourselves to this, and we will continue doing it. We will make Tigrayan females infertile.”
The objects, revealed by X-ray and surgically extracted by doctors more than two years later, were forced inside Tseneat as she lay unconscious after being gang-raped by six soldiers.
She is one of tens of thousands of Tigrayan women subjected to the most extreme forms of sexual violence, in attacks designed to destroy their fertility. Medical records and X-rays obtained by the Guardian and reviewed by independent medical specialists show a pattern of cases where women have had foreign bodies forced into their reproductive organs, including nails, screws, plastic rubbish, sand, gravel and letters.

I am literally crying, it is because of emotion, my heart is exploding of emotion.
I would never have imagined the impact of the article we launched with The Guardian, which brings part of this work of collection of testimonies of sexual violence in #Tigray, would have had.
The ICC has failed to go after those responsible for hundreds of thousands of deaths in #Syria, #Sudan and #Tigray; going after Israel will turn the International Criminal Court into a kangaroo court. 2/3

#Tigray Vice President Announces Plans to Dismantle Illegal Administration in Western Tigray by June
—-
In a media briefing today, Tigray Interim Regional Administration Vice President Tadesse Werede (Gen) revealed that an agreement has been reached with the federal government to dismantle the illegal administration in Western Tigray by the end of June this year.
According to him, the process of disbanding the administration in South Raya and Tselemti is expected to be completed by the end of this month. He emphasized the return of internally displaced persons (IDPs) as part of the plan.
Vice President Tadesse Werede(Gen) that Tigray and the federal government are working closely to ensure the full implementation of the Pretoria agreement.
He denounced what he called “divisive narratives” accusing factions within Tigray of opposing the Pretoria agreement, noting that the entirety of Tigray’s administration is clear on the importance of the Peace Process.
On April 16, Tadesse Werede (Gen) appeared in the media to announce the agreement reached by both parties on the need to dismantle unconstitutional administrations established by Amhara forces in occupied areas. He highlighted that armed groups had engaged in skirmishes with federal forces to hamper the implementation of the peace process.
“The first step is to disband armed groups in the areas and dismantle the unconstitutional administrations established,” he said.
Likewise, he reiterated today that the process will proceed in Western Tigray to dismiss unconstitutional administrations.
“The implementation process will involve AU monitoring mechanisms,” he added.

This statement from AU's Moussa Faki is strange given that his only activity during the genocidal war on Tigray was one support statement for the war. Now he is worried about minor village skirmishes citing even names of villages. It leaves us wondering what this really is.
Local civil society organization Human Rights First reveals that more than 150 ethnic #Tigrayan former personnel of #Ethiopia's army are unlawfully detained in 16 federal military camps and prisons since the beginning of the civil war in November 2020. https://t.co/2NM7jQRhjC
Redai Halefom has dramatically detonated the bomb. It is harrowing to witness how the TPLF, as a party and government, has catastrophically failed the people of #Tigray, subjecting them to the most severe collapse in over six centuries. Following the war, the internal rifts within the party deepened dramatically. Even the generals, who were pivotal in the resistance, have succumbed to this schism. Now, amidst the ruins, we find ourselves facing a grim internal struggle, adding yet another burden to the already beleaguered people.
GSTS Expresses Disappointment with African Union Chairperson's Statement
—
The Global Society of Tigrian Scholars and Professionals (GSTS) has issued a critique of the recent statement by the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat, regarding the new clashes in southern #Tigray.
In a press release on Friday, GSTS expressed deep disappointment with what it described as an "alarmist and misleading" statement by the chairman, stating that Mahamat failed to acknowledge the areas in question are legally under the administration of Tigray and were illegally annexed by forces of the Amhara regional government.
"This statement by Mr. Faki Mahamat is deeply disappointing and misleading," said GSTS in their press release. "It is very surprising that H.E. seems to be unaware, or premeditatedly chose to ignore, that the areas he mentions in his statement are part of the constitutionally recognized territories of Tigray."
GSTS also condemned the AU's decision to suspend its investigation into human rights abuses in Tigray, including ethnic cleansing, war crimes, and acts of genocide.
"We call upon Mr. Faki Mahamat to discharge his responsibilities in a manner that supports and not hinders the implementation of the CoHA," stated GSTS.
"Failure to apply all pressures and available instruments to enact the full implementation of the AUC-sponsored and led Pretoria Agreement not only endangers the ongoing peace process but also sets a dangerous precedent for perpetuating more conflicts in Ethiopia and other parts of Africa."
On Thursday, AU Chair Moussa Faki Mahamat issued a statement expressing his concern over recent clashes in what he called "contested areas in Northern Ethiopia."
Speaking to the BBC this week, Tigray IRA President Getachew Reda said that there was no fighting involving regular forces from both sides. He reiterates his administration’s commitment to the full implementation of the Pretoria agreement.
GSTS called on the African Union to ensure "the immediate, complete and unconditional withdrawal of all foreign (Eritrean) and Non-ENDF (Amhara) forces from the constitutionally recognized territories of Tigray according to the CoHA and Nairobi declaration of the senior commanders.”

27th April - ❝We Didn't Start Any Fighting In Alamata❞ #Tigray President
@Reda_Getachew: ❝The Federal Govt did not complain that the #Tigrayan forces started a fight because it didn't happen. There were conflicts between militia elements on both sides of the border, this is pretty much it... When the Federal Government decided to sign the Pretoria agreement, these elements felt frustrated because they couldn't carry through their plan to destroy Tigray. Those who felt that their plan was frustrated…are hell bent on making sure that Pretoria isn't fully implemented.❞

TPLF Denies Merger Talks with Ruling Prosperity Party:
❝Recent engagements have nothing to do with merger it has everything to do with addressing whatever differences we have so that we can continue to work together in the spirit of implementation of Pretoria.❞

#Ethiopia: #AU chief appeals for ‘respect and full implementation’ of #Pretoria agreement https://t.co/S0gySK43eF
The recent instability arose following moves by the federal government to dismantle local administrations established in the Southern #Tigray zone after these areas were controlled by armed forces from the neighboring #Amhara region in the wake of the outbreak of the November 2020 war in the Tigray region.
In his statement today, Chairperson Mahamat also called for “the commencement of the political dialogue”, as “the most viable means” to respond to the matter, and appealed for “the respect and full implementation” of the November 2022 Cessation of Hostilities Agreement (#COHA) signed in Pretoria, South Africa, between the federal government of Ethiopia and the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF).
The statement followed another call made last week by a group of diplomatic missions in Addis Abeba urging for de-escalation and the protection of civilians.
