Plants of McCarty. Return the of the native. Crossvine (Bignonia capreolata) was once common. It largely disappeared. With removal of cats claw, crossvine is back; now it is in flower (it has gorgeous red flowers)-first time in ~30 years. A small step in recovery.
Flowering in McCarty Woods-Viola palmata, or Wood Violet, An extremely variable entity, often with many leaf forms on the same individual (at the same time or as the season progresses); widespread in Eastern North America. Present in several locations on north side of the woods
McCarty Woods plant of week: Springtime and Prunus caroliniana, Carolina cherry or cherry laurel is in flower. This small understory tree is native to the SE US. This member of the rose family is related to cherry, peach and plum; it is common in McCarty Woods

McCarty Woods--This is a great time to appreciate some of the native grasses of the woods. On the east side Indian lopseed grass (Sorghastrum secundum) and muhly grass (Muhlenbergia capillaris) are spectacular now- all planted over the past several years by volunteers

McCarty Woods--now flowering on the east side--Narrowleaf Silkgrass (Pityopsis graminifolia) which is actually a member of the sunflower family with linear grass-like leaves; native to southeastern U.S.

McCarty Woods--After the hurricane, lots of plants still flowering including a new member of the McCarty Woods flora - frostweed (Verbesina virginica) planted this spring. Horse mint and blanket flower remain in flower as do other plants
McCarty woods held up pretty well during hurricane. Some big branches down at south entrance. No major tree falls. Several Carolina plums snapped; one was blocking the E- W trail near E entrance— we removed it and opened up trail. Other limbs can be removed at Oct 27th cleanup.
