Reasons why you, normal person who will never be rich, actually should defend billionaires:
1. The people coming for their property will sooner or later also come for your more modest property.
2. Liquidating them won’t move the needle on any government program people claim to care about. The richest person in the UK could keep the NHS going for a month. Jeff Bezos’ entire worth, as cash, could keep the lights on at the Pentagon for maybe two months.
3. If people have decided that “the rich” have to pay for the things they want, then realising 2 leads mechanically to 1 - they are coming for your stuff
4. Capping billionaire wealth means that founders have to give up their companies when they get successful, and will hand them over not to worker coops but to the managerial class. This is the process that turns a company like SpaceX into one like Boeing.
5. Further to the above, founder led companies give democracies safe, pet dictatorships to get things done. Any advantage in clarity of purpose that is gained by a one party state like China can be matched without surrendering your freedom. Mark Zuckerberg can only fire people, not have them shot.
It’s not likely to be a popular position, and you’ll get called a “bootlicker”, but it’s better than being a thoughtless innumerate populist who claims to be able to solve real problems by lynching a few tech nerds.
