One day in a hospital room, a simple conversation turned into a moment of mathematical magic.
The British mathematician G. H. Hardy had come to visit the brilliant and ailing Srinivasa Ramanujan.
Trying to lighten the mood, Hardy mentioned the number of the taxi he had taken: 1729. He called it a dull and unremarkable number.
But Ramanujan immediately disagreed.
“No,” he said gently, “it is a very interesting number.”
He explained that 1729 is the smallest number that can be written as the sum of two cubes in two different ways:
1729 = 1³ + 12³
1729 = 9³ + 10³
What seemed ordinary to most people revealed a hidden pattern to Ramanujan. He could see beauty and meaning where others saw nothing special.
Since then, 1729 has become famous as the Hardy–Ramanujan number.
It also gave rise to a special sequence in mathematics known as taxicab numbers. These numbers are defined as the smallest numbers that can be expressed as the sum of two cubes in multiple distinct ways.
This simple yet powerful story shows the genius of Ramanujan. His ability to uncover patterns continues to fascinate and inspire mathematicians around the world—even today.
One of the best ways to sharpen your brain, and to develop intelligence, is to study mathematics. It challenges and strengthens your mind in a way that very few other things do. It’s like going to the gym -- but for your brain!

Ben Affleck and Matt Damon talk about Ramanujan, in Good Will Hunting (1997) ✍️
Ramanujan lived in a tiny hut in India. No formal education, no access to other works. But he came across an old math book and from this basic text he was able to extrapolate theories that had baffled mathematicians for years. … Ramanujan's genius was unparalleled.
Today the FBI officially welcomed the newest class of the FBI Honors Internship Program – an exceptional group of students bringing incredible experience, academic excellence, and a shared commitment to serving America. Throughout the program, this group will gain hands-on experience, contribute to mission-driven work, and learn firsthand how the FBI fulfills its mission to protect the American people. They will get the opportunity to participate in the FBI's record-breaking work happening across the country every day to make communities safer than we've ever been.
We’re thrilled to have them here at the greatest law enforcement agency on earth and witness the impact they will make as the next generation of leaders – welcome team!
