In hindsight; something had to give. A non-profit dedicated to beneficial AI for humanity, running a for-profit SV style startup, spitting out products, moving fast and occasionally breaking things. Not a stable bond.
My optimistic take: this will make OpenAI actually open. Opening up access to their models and leaving the building of marketable apps to startups.
My pessimistic take: this will slow down OpenAI and not change the current approach to gen ai, which is big corp consolidation.

As with all things, the impact of ChatGPT will short term be lower than enthusiastic people proclaim.
And the long term impact will be substantially higher than skeptics think.
