Delhi Police's facial recognition flagged 2,873 people as having criminal records at the Jantar Mantar protests. 25 of them were already in jail at the time. No legal backing. No accountability. An 80% "match" treated as proof. IFF has an RTI pending, transferred 14 times, still unanswered. We're demanding this list be withdrawn and a moratorium on facial recognition surveillance.

This is extraordinary and deeply disturbing.

Delhi Police’s facial-recognition system identified at least 25 people accused of murder, rape and attempted murder as being present at the Jantar Mantar protests - even though they were actually sitting in jail.

That leaves only two possibilities, and both are deeply alarming:

1. The technology is dangerously unreliable. The very system Delhi Police is using to identify and potentially target protesters in Delhi and across the country is so flawed that it is identifying people who were not even at the protest as having been there.

OR

2. The technology isn’t the problem. The police is. Criminals and thugs were deliberately brought to the protest site to provoke violence, create disorder and malign the students’ cause.

Either way, this demands answers.

If the technology is this unreliable, why is Delhi Police using it to profile protesters?

And if the technology is accurate, how did people who were demonstrably sitting in jail end up being identified as protesters at Jantar Mantar?

Delhi Police cannot have it both ways.

It owes the country an answer.

DCP Sachin Sharma gave a free pass to the goons at Jantar Mantar, refusing to take action or arrest any of them.

When our representatives went to speak to him, he threatened them, saying, “Ek baar tum aur Dipke haath lago, will beat you black and blue.”

He is also the same officer who allowed a truck loaded with stones to be parked at Jantar Mantar before the march.

He is the blue eyed boy of the regime.

When this attack happened, I personally went to the DCP and asked him to arrest these goons. The DCP replied, “We can’t arrest people randomly.”

I told him, “The attack happened right in front of the police. How can you say you can’t arrest them?”

To which the DCP replied, “You are free to go to the courts”

Such is the attitude of Delhi Police.
