Did you know? Before a single penny is spent on a bike hangar, EV charger, or dockless bike bay, councils must waste £3,000–£10,000 on legal paperwork and consultations—just to repurpose one parking space.
The Traffic Regulation Order (TRO) process—created in 1967 for major road closures—now applies to almost ANY small change to ANY section of tarmac. Councils must:
🔹 Draft legal documents
🔹 Publish public notices in newspapers
🔹 Hold a 21-day consultation
🔹 Respond to objections
🔹 Hold committee reviews if challenged
🔹 Formally approve and “seal” the order
🔹 THEN implement the change
This is wasteful, slow, and anti-growth. I’m calling on @Heidi_Labour to propose an amendment exempting minor public benefit changes, saving taxpayers millions while boosting pro-growth and active travel policies.

Here in Islington, we believe streets are more than just a route from A to B – they're community spaces, that all should be able to enjoy using.
That’s why we’ve just announced exciting improvements from Nag’s Head to York Way. Find out more ⬇️ (1/3)
New study shows LTN residents change behaviour - they walk and cycle more, drive less. Also, LTNs provide high VFM when comparing health economic benefits from physical activity to costs of scheme implementation. Positive news! https://t.co/teOeJbcFNV
ACTION ALERT: You only have THREE DAYS to support low-traffic streets in Barnsbury! Take 5 minutes to respond to Islington's survey and support the proposals. Together, we can create safer, healthier streets that are open to ALL users. https://t.co/GC1GinDLCs
🗣️ “With fewer cars going by, it’s definitely got a bit more inviting, especially on weekends when people have a mooch around!"
@IslingtonLife has been chatting with local businesses, to find out how #LowTrafficNeighbourhoods have impacted them: https://t.co/zHIQLyF35b
Has a fantastic evening at pedestrianised Exmouth Market last night - felt like I was on holiday. There is zero reason why Chapel Market can’t compete in the same way. It just needs the political will to go big on facilitating outdoor dining in the evenings.
People-friendly streets are helping businesses on Cross St thrive. 💚 Find out more in the latest @islingtonlife magazine.
We look forward to the same in #BarnsburyLaycock
Great to see our neighbouring LTN being approved.
As each zone or patch for walking, scooting & biking is stitched together - we will end up with a quilt.
We’ve made the Amwell #LowTrafficNeighbourhood permanent! 🎉
Since we introduced it as a trial in November 2020, the neighbourhood has helped make it easier for local people to travel, and has created more enjoyable streets. Find out more! ⬇️ (1/3)
There is no blanket @Mark_J_Harper. The Welsh Government had been working with Welsh local authorities for 4 years so that they issued TROs which excepted certain 30mph roads from changing to 20mph on 17th Sept when the legislation was enacted. Your ignorance is shameful.
We were saddened by the release of the DfT casualty data today, which confirmed that 29,742 people were killed or seriously injured in crashes on Britain’s roads in 2022 alone.
We must address this public health issue immediately.

I’m sceptical of anything that’s just a new name for LTNs, but @IslingtonBC’s ‘Liveable Neighbourhood’ approach in Mildmay is so impressive. Not just filters, but all the things they enable - public realm, school streets, safer cycling - in one package. Other councils take note
