My NOT so hot take:
As a coach, I shouldn’t be able to tell what sport your programming for when I see your athlete in the weight room
Meaning, no fancy “sport specific” exercises, no ball or sticks attached to bands
Just:
1. Sprint FAST
2. Jump HIGH & FAR
3. Lift HEAVY
Speed is not just about running faster.
It can also improve other aspects of performance such as:
- Jumps
- Explosiveness
- Quickness
- Speed reserve

This gives you a better idea of how hard it is to play at the next level.
That’s not meant to discourage anybody. If that’s the goal for you or your athlete, go chase it.
But the value isn’t just in the outcome. It’s in what that pursuit demands of you…

One of the biggest misconceptions in training is that hard equals effective.
It doesn’t.
Someone with zero experience could create a workout that leaves you exhausted in minutes. Push a prowler until you collapse. Run until you throw up. Making someone tired is easy.
