In early 2013 Tesla was close to collapse.

Elon had publicly committed to a profitable quarter. Hitting the target required 4,750 Model S deliveries. The previous year the volume had been far smaller.

The final weeks became extreme. Almost no sleep. Elon moved his desk onto the factory floor and stayed there. Staff from every department were brought in to clean and deliver cars.

They reached the number at 3pm on the last Saturday of March and recorded a small profit. The company survived.

This remains one of the clearest cases of how far he was prepared to go when failure was the alternative. Most leaders keep distance. He removed it.
