In Principia Mathematica, Whitehead and Russell spent hundreds of pages proving the validity of 1+1= 2 as part of their effort to ground all of mathematics in formal logic.
They built a foundation based on set theory and symbolic logic showing that simple arithmetic could be derived from first principles. This approach shows how deeply mathematics can be formalized revealing the complexity behind even the most basic concepts.
