After a year of scientific scrutiny, a rock sample collected by the Perseverance rover has been confirmed to contain a potential biosignature. The sample is the best candidate so far to provide evidence of ancient microbial life on Mars. https://t.co/0BAO1dhMG8
Seder has been attacking Abundance for weeks. Ezra comes on & it turns out Sam agrees with him that it's impossible to build enough affordable housing given current costs. When Ezra asks him how to decrease those costs, he can only pivot. HE HAS NO ANSWER.

One of the load-bearing claims behind pro-tariff populism is that recent decades of globalization and trade liberalization have been a disaster for American workers.
Let’s examine that claim against the evidence. 🧵
So this interview lasted 2 hours so this “you’re scaring me” part might seem like an overreaction or fearmongering to someone without that context.
There’s a lot of evidence to support my hypothesis that a potential H5N1 pandemic would be worse than COVID.
From the standpoint of gov't efficiency, the recent cancellation of large federal RCTs in education & other areas is counterproductive. These trials are unique in providing highly-credible evidence about what works & what doesn't in gov't spending (a🧵with concrete examples). 1/3
Elon, I have long admired you and what you have accomplished, especially at SpaceX and Tesla.
You know as well as I do, that Butch and Suni are returning with Crew-9, as has been the plan since last September. Even now, you are not sending up a rescue ship to bring them home. They are returning on the Dragon capsule that has been on ISS since last September.
*Every single* cure for a disease ultimately flowed from basic exploratory research. Stopping basic research is like stopping the mountain rains and expecting rivers of cures to still flow. Examples:
1) studying saliva of Gila monster -> GLP1's
2) studying funghi -> first statins
3) mRNA biology -> gene therapy for spinal atrophy
4) studying bacterial genetics -> CRISPR gene therapies
5) studies of nuclear magnetic resonance -> MRI scans
this list can go on and on. Not only in biology but all aspects of technology.... e.g.
6) curvature of spacetime -> GPS
7) quantum mechanics -> semiconductors
8) electromagnetism -> fiber optics -> internet
...
Great (and scary) visualization of 2024 daily temperatures compared to prior years by the BBC today. Evocative of the iconic Joy Division album cover from 1979: https://t.co/o2zLigFV7h
@mvinaes Og dén forskel underbygger vel også den absurde værdistigning, som boligejere - i København og andre attraktive områder i landet - skattefrit er kommet til.
How serious would it be if the Atlantic Ocean overturning circulation (#AMOC) winds down in response to global heating?
Briefly explained at the New York Times last week.
The mind-blowing thing we get WRONG about energy:
Our current energy system is very inefficient - we waste most of the energy in conversion processes.
The good news: With electrification and renewable energy many of those inefficiencies will disappear.

The Economist just published a deeply-researched story about car bloat, and it's very, very damning:
"For every life that the heaviest 1% of SUVs and trucks save, there are more than a dozen lives lost in other vehicles."
Well worth your time: https://t.co/eHalcNkiBX
Fascinating data analysis from the Economist looking at 7.5m US car crashes
The chart below shows likelihood of you dying in a car crash by weight of your car (grey line) and weight of other car (red line)
So it’s in our own self interest to get a heavier car (slight reduction in chance of our own death) but definitely not in society’s (big increase in chance other driver dies if our car gets heavier)
Potential case for additional tax for cars over 4000lbs (from that point on there’s little extra safety for the driver but a lot of risk for others)
Climate change is complex, but the math of CO2 is actually pretty simple.
Increasing emissions ➡️ faster warming
Flat emissions ➡️ constant warming
Decreasing emissions ➡️ slowing warming
Zero emissions ➡️ stopping warming
Negative emissions ➡️ cooling
Ved du, at hvis du bliver ramt af en bil, der kører 50 km/t, når du går eller cykler, så svarer det til at falde ud fra 3. sal? Cyklistforbundet vil have normalhastigheden i byerne ned til 30 km/t. Skriv under her: #dkpol

Aaaand we have another winner of the "EVs and renewables can never happen because of material scarcety" sweepstake. I thought @pwrhungry was more serious. Let me explain why this is misleading bollox.
