The dataset behind this famous chart on the declining cost of genome sequencing has had its NIH funding cut.
It tracked progress towards & beyond an ambitious goal ($1000 genome) that succeeded.
Could any funders rescue the project? Sharing this would be very appreciated.
I wrote a new piece on how much progress has been made in treating childhood leukemia.
The answer is: quite a lot!
Before the 1970s, fewer than 10% of children diagnosed survived 5 years after diagnosis.
Now most are cured and around 85% survive that long.

Young men lean right by 50 points

Young women lean left by 22 points

Social trust declined from 1973-93 but basically hasn't changed since then.
"Americans are no less trusting than they were 30 years ago" isn't a grabby headline but may it's true?
If Max is paying a marketing company a $1m annual retainer for naming strategy, this is pathetic.
But. If Max figured that it can add and remove “HBO” from its streaming title every 2 years to create a bunch of free outraged publicity, I sort of respect the play.
How we "guessed" the Pope using network science: inside the cardinal network. A study by me, Beppe Soda and Alessandro Iorio. Article: https://t.co/xQ0fTmpVxb @Unibocconi
This is interesting.
Americans pay about 4X more for brand-name drugs than the typical OECD country
... but Americans pay 33% *less* for generics, which make up 90 percent of our purchases by volume.
I'm basically an optimist, but I find it hard to argue against two claims:
a) Screens/social media makes it easier to not pay attention in school
b) GenAI makes it easier to cheat in school
The combination of (a) + (b) is going to be a huge challenge for young ppl's education.
When you layer over that the fact that generative AI tools are going to get more intelligent over a period of time when teen and adult literacy scores are declining, I think you've got the basic ingredients of a pretty serious cultural problem.

The Australian Federal election swing in historical context (1943-2025).
The shift in two-party preference is more modest than I expected, given the swing in seats. #Auspol2025#AusVotes2025
New piece: It's not just Trump's approval taking a hit. Voters also say they care less than they did in 2024 about (formerly) GOP-leaning issues like crime and immigration. Concerns about the economy, social security, and health care are up. The thermostat comes for Trump
Negative partisanship is a helluva drug:
Up until a few months ago, liberal and conservative Americans held pretty much the same views on free trade.
Now, not so much…
We are tracking his standing with data from @YouGovAmerica
As of this week, YouGov finds that 52% of Americans disapprove of how he is handling his job as president, while 42% approve.

Dismal expectations for the economy in the NY Fed's survey of regional manufacturers.
Basically every line -- new orders, employment etc. -- is going down, with the exception of prices (received, and paid) which are going up.
