Prof. (Dr.) M. Srinivas, Member (Health), NITI Aayog, virtually addressed the Micronutrient Forum Global Conference 2026, being held in Accra, Ghana, from 28 September to 1 October 2026, under the theme “Nutrition at the Frontiers of a Changing Environment.” Dr. Neha Bakshi, Consultant, NITI Aayog, represented NITI Aayog in person.
Speaking on “From Knowledge to Action: Advancing Nutrition through South-South Collaboration,” Prof. Srinivas highlighted India’s policy and programme experience in addressing micronutrient deficiencies, including iodine deficiency and anaemia, and emphasised the need to translate evidence into sustainable and scalable impact.
He also underscored the importance of South-South collaboration in sharing knowledge, country-specific experiences and best practices to strengthen the nutritional status of people globally.

PTI INFOGRAPHICS | The Silent Emergency: Why Half of India’s Pregnant Women Are at Risk
According to the National Family Health Survey (NFHS-5), 52.2% of pregnant women in India suffer from anaemia. This widespread deficiency is a major contributor to maternal mortality and poses serious risks to unborn children, including low birth weight and preterm delivery.
While dietary habits and lifecycle deficiencies drive these numbers, treating the condition requires a tailored approach based on severity. Medical experts recommend oral supplements for mild cases, while emphasising the need for intravenous options for rapid correction in moderate to severe cases.
Swipe through the slides below for a detailed breakdown of the anaemia crisis and treatment shift (n/1):

Closing insights from our Tackling Maternal Anaemia session at #WHSNewDelhi2025
“We must treat low Hb in pregnancy with greater seriousness. Women with anaemia are less tolerant of blood loss, raising the risk of PPH. Prevention must start preconception and continue throughout pregnancy.”
– Dr. Jaydeep Tank, Immediate Past President, @fogsiofficial
New data from DABS shows maternal anaemia levels may be 8–9% lower than estimated.
“To Test, Treat and Track better, we need innovations—non-invasive screening, real-time treatment algorithms, and point-of-care serum ferritin testing.”
– Dr. Reema Mukherjee, @ICMRDELHI

After a powerful Day 1 at #WHSNewDelhi2025, we’re set to begin our first session of Day 2: Tackling Maternal Anaemia for Healthier Pregnancies
📍 MR8, Bharat Mandapam | 🕘 9:00–10:30 AM
“Anaemia is the world’s biggest public health problem. Most middle-income countries are still struggling.”
– Dr. N K Arora, Executive Director, INCLEN Trust International
Key reflections:
1️⃣ Understanding why over 50% population in India is anaemic and what protects the other 50%?
2️⃣ Micronutrients don’t work in isolation—iron, folate, B12, and others interact in complex ways
3️⃣ Gut health matters. Poor WASH services can impair nutrient absorption, reducing the impact of supplements.
If 92% of women are receiving IFA in 🇮🇳, why aren’t we seeing better outcomes? We need to rethink how we define and deliver success.

During the discussion, clinical insights from the RAPIDIRON trial were front and centre.
“IV iron should be considered a first-line treatment for moderate iron deficiency anaemia in pregnancy. A single dose is both safe and effective.”
– Dr. Shivaprasad Goudar, JNMC
Key takeaways:
✔️ Single-dose IV FCM shows strong safety and efficacy during pregnancy
✔️ Potential to simplify protocols with one larger dose vs. two doses
✔️ Supports early intervention—especially preconceptional iron sufficiency in women of childbearing age
“What was once an emergency protocol is now a standard of care. IV FCM has been successfully scaled to secondary-level facilities, with frontline workers trained and adverse reactions monitored.”
– Dr. Kapil Yadav, @aiims_newdelhi & NCEAR-Anaemia

Dr. Adamu Belay from Ethiopia highlights the importance of large-scale food fortification to combat micronutrient deficiencies. A crucial step towards better health for all. 🌍 #GFRS24#FSSAISummit@PMOIndia@MoHFW_INDIA
Not all contraceptive options work for everyone. When women have access to different methods, they are more likely to choose one that suits their personal preferences and health conditions, leading to higher uptake and continuation rates.

@neilwatkins05@COP27P So true! Improving the livelihoods and income of smallholder farmers – especially women – is critical to advancing the goals concerning sustainable farming practices, food security and for bridging the gender gap.
Interesting interview with @NINDirector Dr Hemalatha, in which she talks about reasons behind 🇮🇳's slow progress on key maternal and child nutrition indicators. Dr Hemalatha also shares insights about @ICMRNIN's proposed revision of dietary guidelines.

Thank you @DrAmbrishMithal. Vitamin D deficiency is widespread in Indian population. And fortification is one of the most cost effective complementary strategy to address this.
Don't get misled by reports about #VitaminD from D replete populations
Indians have widespread D deficiency - urban Indians often have levels below 15 or even 10 ng/ml
Vitamin D is essential for bone health
#fortification is an important strategy
