Statement on the release of journalist #Million_Beyene
After two weeks in undisclosed, informal detention facilities in Addis Ababa and outside the city, following his abduction from the #Addis_Standard newsroom, Million Beyene has been handed over this afternoon to his family, as well as JAKENN’s legal team and colleagues.
Further details will be shared to the public as appropriate and in a manner that does not compromise Million’s safety and security.
JAKENN Publishing PLC, the publisher of Addis Standard, unequivocally rejects the abduction by intelligence officers and the subsequent ordeal suffered by Million.
This incident underscores the urgent need to uphold freedom of the press and protect journalists from intimidation, unlawful detention, and coercion.
A free and independent press is essential to safeguarding the public’s right to information and the rule of law.

Exiled Ethiopian journalist Yaekob Yatene found dead at his Nairobi home. Cause still under investigation.
He was one of the few non-Tigrayan journalists who denounced the genocide in Tigray during the war.
May he rest in peace.

News: #The_Reporter’s Journalist detained in #Western_Tigray for entering without permit, taking photos
#Bewket_Abebe, the Chief Editor of The Reporter (#Ethiopia), was detained for three days in Western #Tigray after local authorities said he entered the zone “without a required special permit” and took photographs in public spaces in #Humera town, the magazine announced yesterday.
According to The Reporter Magazine, Bewket was arrested on 21 March, 2026, in Humera Town while on assignment to conduct interviews and report from the region. Officials reportedly warned journalists that a specialized permit is required not only to carry out professional work but also to the area.
Prior to his detention, Bewket had been in communication with local administrators about his travel plans and had scheduled a potential interview with #Ashete_Demilew, the administrator of what has been referred to as the “Wolqait Tegede Setit Humera Zone”, an administration installed by the #Amhara regional government, since the early days of the Tigray war that outbroke in November 2020.
Despite notifying authorities of his itinerary and reporting objectives, he was held in custody for three nights without formal charges being brought against him.
