Police found roughly 30 partially clothed young men packed inside a sweltering basement at a Wisconsin fraternity house, covered in food, condiments and other liquids — with several showing signs of being physically struck.

Officers responded to an anonymous tip at the Alpha Epsilon Pi house on Langdon Street in Madison around 8:20 p.m. Wednesday during rush week. The thermostat in the basement was set to 81 degrees, creating hot and humid conditions. The vast majority of those inside were 18 years old.

Fraternity president Brayden J. Klein and vice president Samuel N. Vane, both 20, were arrested on hazing and disorderly conduct allegations. Police say cooperation from those at the scene was limited, and statements from witnesses didn't align — raising red flags for investigators.

There is a video of the twin brother telling what happened. This is what he said: . Karmelo was sitting in the tent with the boys, and he wasn’t supposed to be there. They asked him to leave. Austin (the deceased boy) told Karmelo to move, Karmelo said “make me”, so Austin grabbed Karmelo’s backpack (to make him move). Austin got stabbed by Karmelo. What ever made Austin think it was OK to grab that backpack? Would he still have gotten stabbed if he hadn’t grabbed something that wasn’t his? We won’t ever know the answer to that, but I suspect the answer is no. I’m very sorry that this happened and that the end result was what it is. But I can’t tell you how many times I’ve told my children, don’t ever touch anything that doesn’t belong to you. Do parents still teach their children this? Sure makes you wonder, doesn’t it. This could’ve been handled completely differently. Instead of the kids taking it upon themselves to remove somebody from the tent, they could’ve gotten an adult involved, and most likely things would’ve turned out differently.
