I look at genomes and try to understand evolution. My passions: marine arctic biodiversity, seaweed, climate change, learning about the universe, being a dad.

2-million-year-old DNA how do you analyse such DNA? Are you interested in understanding how we overcame the challenges and eventually succeeded after 16 years of trying, published this 7th of Dec. https://t.co/QUpGZ08Xr3 thread 1/9
#GradStudents are arguably *the* primary producers of #research output at Canadian universities, and core contributors to the #teaching and #leadership missions of their institutions.
**But how (and how well) are they compensated?**
Let's take a look! A long thread 🧵👇

@G_O_W_A_N Oh yeah, it went directly overhead so it didn’t create such a large tail from our perspective, but we could see little pieces breaking off and everything, east to westish. I thought I was watching a satellite break up or something, nice one grabbing your phone!
@Tom__Jenkins Although, keep in mind algae like to grow with/on/in algae, so your no hits could still represent non targets…I’ve seen mixed polysiphonia samples create this sort of headache (ie mixed genomes in the read file).
@Tom__Jenkins Seems ok, although if illumina reads I find the first 10-15 bp are often quite noisy so I tend to do a hard head crop of those. Not sure if concatenation would have removed that noise.

@biolumiJEFFence Also the two week standard deadline is not doing anyone any favours…without fail I will extend another two weeks. Reviews cannot be rushed
