@AdviserCounsel The trick is to teach the kid not to be a jackass. I realize that’s not always possible but where else are you putting the money? Utma has the same issue (but I can get trump account to Roth). If the kid is a jackass is he really using the 529 money to go to school?

@Tyler_Menzer @lymanstoneky @TheDangerman061 nobody has brought up the fact you can just wait to convert to Roth IRA until the kid isn’t a dependent anymore at 22-23… If the kid graduates in May, only 1/2yr of income. I hadn’t thought about this changing the math on whether the kid should claim themselves, nice thought.

@taxpreptech If you convert to Roth IRA when kid turns 18 (or after kiddie tax is relevant) I really like the trump account for jump starting retirement savings. I plan on utilizing both 529 and trump account for my kids.

@TKopelman I’m liking the new trump accounts as well, then converting to Roth IRA when they’re 18 and pay very little tax. Great tax free jump start for their retirement! I think I will be splitting my contributions for my kids between the 2 accounts when I have them.

@dollarsanddata We have our pay checks go 50% in our joint accounts and separate accounts instead. All entertainment/personal spending from separate accounts.
