Again, I understand why there is so much concern about the rise of AfD. But there should surely be more concern in mainstream media about Die Linke, the direct descendant of the party which ran an oppressive communist regime in East Germany for 40 years
I was honored to give the keynote speech at the Quest for Democracy in Saudi Arabia Summit and wanted to share my full remarks.
I agreed to give this keynote because patriotic Saudi citizens asked me to speak out about the abuses of the Saudi Crown Prince, Muhammad bin Salman (MBS).
MBS is trying to whitewash his regime’s tyranny by weaponizing culture and popular culture against his citizens.
Life in Saudi Arabia may appear glitzy and filled with entertainment to those in the world who don’t look closer, but it is soaked in blood and enforced silence thanks to MBS.
I was touched by the wonderful introduction given to me by the Saudi women’s activist @LinaAlhathloul, whose family, particularly her brave sister Loujain, have gone through hell under the leadership of MBS.
Thank you @aalodah and @MideastDC for your gracious invitation.
Apparantly @Avis expects their customers to check every part of the car when picking it up and report a missing part before driving. Otherwise they make their customers pay for it. They have lost me as a customer from now on. #badcustomerservice
Luís Figo. Florentino Pérez. 22 years later, the people at the centre of one of Europe's most controversial football transfers tell their stories.
The Figo Affair: The Transfer that Changed Football, coming to Netflix 25 August.
Three months ago I heard Salman Rushdie speak at the PEN World Voices Festival. He said: “A poem cannot stop a bullet. A novel can’t defuse a bomb … But we are not helpless … We can sing the truth & name the liars.” We must tell better stories than the tyrants.
Russian President Vladimir Putin is apparently settling in for an extended war of attrition in Ukraine. NATO, meanwhile, has begun debating what war aims it is willing to support and how peace might ultimately look. https://t.co/UyWz6H7qxH
Today, there was an election in Germany's most populous state, NRW.
The parties which most coddled up to Putin and are now most resistant to sending more weapons to Ukraine lost a lot of votes.
The Greens, who are most vocal in supporting Ukraine, are the biggest winner!

"What about plants?" - something every vegetarian/vegan gets asked. Do new findings about plants change things? My Project Syndicate column tries to answer that: https://t.co/2iTlAGHxpn
This is exactly right: there is no such thing as the "mainstream media" - not as a unified, homogenous body - and never has been https://t.co/WS55lHdMGz
Big day tomorrow here in Poland. The parliament will vote on whether the one remaining independent television news station is allowed to remain on the air. If the government wins - they are begging, bribing MPs right now - Poland can no longer be considered a democracy.
