API Gateway vs Load Balancer is a common point of confusion.

Both route traffic.

Both make life easy for developers.

But they are NOT the same.

✅ API Gateway is like the door to your application.

Your application might consist of Public APIs, Private APIs and Functions.

The API gateway acts as a single entry point to all of them.

Think of the API Gateway as the Host who welcomes you into a restaurant and helps you get to the table.

✅ Load Balancer is like the traffic cop that tries to manage traffic and prevent congestion.

Your application’s public API can be running on multiple servers (or instances).

The Load Balancer routes the traffic to an appropriate server instance.

And it does so by ensuring that no single server gets overloaded.

👉So what’s the key difference between the two?

API Gateway focuses on the functionality, security, and management of your APIs. It can also perform lots of supporting functions like Authentication, Authorization, Rate Limiting and so on.

Load Balancer is all about efficient distribution of traffic, ensuring your servers stay happy and responsive.

👉 Can you use API Gateway and Load Balancer together?

Yes, of course.

You can have a Load Balancer downstream to an API Gateway.

The API Gateway takes care of high-level routing at the service level whereas the Load Balancer can handle the instance-level traffic distribution.

Similarly, you can also have a Load Balancer upstream to an API Gateway.

This applies when the API Gateway is also running on multiple instances and needs some sort of load distribution.
