@crreesor About 9-10 t/ha. A bit less than in Ontario- no GM corn allowed in FR; fewer pesticide choices: more politics.
About the same maturity range in France as in Ontario - why I go so interested in FR corn agriculture, so many decades ago.
AGPM (French corn growers association) seeks €450/ha in subsidy support (related to poor crops and high costs). Average cost of production said to be 240 €/t in France (about C$350/tonne or C$8.75/bushel).

First killing frost around house early this morning. No complaints as it's Oct 21. Corn was mature almost 1 month ago. To be harvested in early November. Corn drying costs will be huge.
@feedn4kids@AgFarmer98@GrainFarmers Jeff, one key reason why the grain trade stopped using a common chart for shrinkage in drying was a concern from the Ont Corn Producers' Association. We wanted more open competition, and also had concerns about legality of the former practice.
@MdMcLean1 We are really good at telling in November what amount of N we should have applied in June or July. The trick is in learning how to make more accurate predictions 4-5 months earlier.
After about 5 years of effort, I confess that I haven't gained much insight on our farms.
@ErikFeedsCities@KeithWells6@MdMcLean1@WheatPete The " invisible loss" is partly in recognition of the reality that corn must normally be dried further for safe longer-term storage, even if deemed "dry" at 15.5% moisture.
@ErikFeedsCities@KeithWells6@MdMcLean1@WheatPete As recall, the grain trade stopped using a common chart for drying chanrges and deductions, about 1995. It was a decision at the time of the Ontario Grain Trade and Feed Association. I think we have long had a 0.5% weight deduction for invisible losses, when drying corn.
@KeithWells6@MdMcLean1@WheatPete Keith is right. Once, every elevator in Ontario had identical drying charges and discounts. This stopped because it was seen as violating Canadian competition law.
Harvest relief for America’s farmers.
Today, @POTUS and @SecRollins announced the Harvest Fuel Relief Program — making $8 BILLION available for one-time payments to farmers facing higher costs and market disruptions.
Here’s what that means:
➡️ Payments to help cover a portion of estimated losses for the 2026 crop year.
➡️ Payment amounts based on planted acres, production costs, crop yields, and prices.
➡️ Row crop payment rates announced in November, with details for other eligible commodities to follow.
➡️ Application will be available online using a https://t.co/97Hz4rfseK account that is connected to USDA.

@crreesor I agree.
Quackgrass, la bête noire of Ontario agriculture for generations, is now largely unknown. Organic farmers tell me Canada thistle is now their enemy number one.
To be fair, I'm seeing too much fleabane on many ON farms this fall, and they are sure not all organic.
@crreesor I recall him once working a fallowed field all spring and summer, trying to rid of quack grass. But then it turned rainy in late August, tllage was impossible, the quackgrass thrived, and he was back to square one.
Now with a few ounces of glyphosate per acre...
@crreesor Farm I came from was mostly organic (in practice, if not name). No pesticides and little fertilizer (though dad did apply P directly rather than as purchased manure from neighbours).
Changes afterwards included pesticide use and much less tillage. More sustainable; less organic.
@agronomix22 This technology looks especially valuable for organic growers. A concern of mine is how well this will work with heavy residue cover - for weed control and risk of fire.
@JacobNederend@zaruk Jacob, I'm with David & share his concerns about big money behind some NGO activities. But that does not mean you're wrong in highlighting funding behind other media/influence-peddling efforts too.
As I see it, it is not a case of one versus the other, nor reason for condemning.
@Mark01425860067@Jtkush1488 We've never known anything like this at all in Canada. Perhaps the worst for us was the War (invasion) of 1812.
But that seemed like a gentlemen's war, compared to the havoc now in the Ukraine.
One "positive": Mr. Trump is still no Stalin. I'm not as sure about Putin.
Trump: "I watched an interview of a young woman the other day from Ukraine. And she said, 'President Zelenskyy has destroyed our country. President Zelenskyy has taken our men away from us. Our men have no legs, no arms. Our men in many cases in mental institutions or they're dead.'"
@WoodyVa2@kevinki16180099@JoeDeBrouwer Outdoor weather station says it reached -1C here last night.
But miraculously, our flowers and tomatoes still look fine.
Not enough, unfortunately, to supply the Leamington plant for long.
And we still have to get past tonight.🫤
@Milkabot I'm glad those contrary voices exist. I believe there are two sides to every story. And I worry that so much of what I see comes from Canadian, not US, media.
But that said, it's hard to see anything good about this man.
One blessing is that he has mostly left farmers alone.
Our farm auction opened today & will close on October 20th. Thanks to @SteffesGroup for this video. https://t.co/jT7IheiQes
While @GerryHertz & I are ready to retire from farming, this all still feels very strange! Some have said it must be bittersweet; yes, I suppose it is.
