Final version of our paper on scaling in SLiM now published in @GenomeBiolEvol !
We’ve added some new results comparing coalescence, linkage disequilibrium, and background selection in various scaled simulations. @Jazlyn_Mooney@Xinjun90

Happy to share this new preprint (my first ever!🥳) written with @Xinjun90@Jazlyn_Mooney, which delves into the effects of scaling SLiM evolutionary simulations and offers best practices for mitigating scaling effects.
Please repost: My department (quantitative and computational biology at the University of Southern California) is hiring a teaching-track faculty member. The new hire will focus on teaching statistics courses to biology students. Apply by Dec 1 https://t.co/AxIvvQCGc4
Science is intertwined with eugenics, and eugenic ideologies continue to negatively impact #Indigenous communities and science today.
Read a timely and important perspective piece in #GENETICS from @Jazlyn_Mooney and colleagues: https://t.co/3TPLOD0iAd
Excited to say our pre-print is out now in @CellCellPress

Maria added some great analyses to better understand if SNPs from heterospecific genomes map in the conspecific reference. Scariest part was when some of them completely disappeared 🥴
Herasight, named after the goddess who threw her disabled child off a mountain, seems focused on public outreach using embryo selection for IQ to win over far rightwing pseuds & techbros
Really happy this one is finally out! Tessa worked super hard to get it across the finish line. Please read if you are thinking about how to or if you should scale your sims.
In a new #GENETICS research, @Dandan_Peng, Mulder, and @DocEdge85 evaluate the performance of several ancestral recombination graph (ARG) estimation methods used for determining the historical time course of a population-mean polygenic score.

Received an Honorable Mention for my NSF GRFP proposal! It was very competitive year due to funding (< half the usual number of awards) so I’m very happy for an HM. Thanks to my mentors @Jazlyn_Mooney Arun Durvasula & @Xinjun90 for their support & LORs!
Congrats to the awardees🎉
This seems massively overhyped. "Creating the dire wolves called for making just 20 edits in 14 genes in the common gray wolf." In other words, it's not a dire wolf - it's a gray wolf modified to be more like a dire wolf. That's a cool achievement but they have not 'brought the dire wolf back' sorry.
Good news SLiM fans-- if you are developing in SLiM and like to use vscode, I've just released a beta version of a vscode extension that deals specifically with SLiM/Eidos:

In #GENETICS, @RoshniAPatel, @spence_jeffrey_, @jkpritch, and colleagues explored the use of conditional frequency spectra to study selection on complex traits that circumvent some of the limitations of #GWAS.

For folks still here, the first big project from my group is pre-printed. Super talented postdoc @mariaakop explored how reference bias can skew estimates of diversity, demography, divergence and recombination rate with help from @_ellie_cat and @GMenchev. Thread 👇🏽
1/7 🧬 New Preprint Alert: Our study highlights the risks of using divergent reference genomes in population genomics. The choice of reference genome can skew key inferences about demography, diversity, and selection. Read on for insights! https://t.co/lzxeYthiJN
