[Houston Stressans @TexansCommenter]

Sengun still doing plenty of dumb and lazy stuff like the end of last year I see

[Houston Stressans @TexansCommenter]

@crossfire3149 Of course but effort to me should be something to change quickly.

Still hopefully that element improves but on the same hand in the 2 game sample seems to have improved with the physicality aspect

[Houston Stressans @TexansCommenter]

@sharkattakTX Ha yep impressive

[Houston Stressans @TexansCommenter]

@crossfire3149 I was referring to sloppy turnovers and being careless with the ball. How would you deduct missing shots to being lazy?

[Houston Stressans @TexansCommenter]

@senseident liked him being tough in paint

[Houston Stressans @TexansCommenter]

@scullytaco still plays sloppy during the game. both can be true

[Houston Stressans @TexansCommenter]

@crossfire3149 what i said was still true champ. different element of his game

[Houston Stressans @TexansCommenter]

@sharkattakTX how?

[Houston Stressans @TexansCommenter]

@SieversLuke impressive play down the stretch

My overall takeaway:

McCarthy deserves credit for helping spark the comeback. He showed legitimate arm talent, made some excellent downfield throws and gave the Giants a chance.

But I wasn't nearly as impressed with his processing, overall accuracy or decision-making as the raw numbers might suggest.

Houston should present a considerably different challenge with its pass rush, coverage disguises and blitz packages.

Generating pressure with four or bringing extra rushers, while disguising coverages and forcing McCarthy to work through his progressions, will be imperative.

Rush-lane integrity will also be key. The Texans can't allow him to escape the pocket or hurt them with designed QB runs and scrambles.

And perhaps most importantly, Houston has to be prepared to defend contested catches. The Texans have struggled with 50/50 balls largely this year, and McCarthy has shown he's willing to throw to receivers who aren't necessarily open.

Even with good coverage and pressure, defenders have to be ready for the ball to come their way at any moment.

The goal is to limit the explosives, force him to make consistent reads and decisions, and capitalize on the opportunities he gives you.

J.J. McCarthy came off the bench last week and helped lead the Giants comeback attempt against the Saints.

Some of the numbers were impressive:

11/21, 243 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT
+0.43 EPA/play
64% success rate
33.3% explosive play rate
146 yards on 4/5 deep passes (20+)
15.6-yard aDOT

Below are all of J.J. McCarthy's snaps against the Saints last week.

My film analysis and takeaways will be in the replies below.

Schematically, there was likely plenty of carryover from what New York was already doing with Jaxson Dart, including zone-read elements.

McCarthy operated almost exclusively out of shotgun from what I saw, which makes sense given the game script.

Interestingly, PFF charted zero screens and zero play-action dropbacks.

The Saints played a lot of zone, with some extremely deep safety alignments. That context matters when evaluating the explosive production.
