The keffiyeh has been worn by Palestinian farmers (fellahin) and Bedouin to protect from the sun and dust for centuries, long predating the Ottoman period. It was traditionally contrasted with the fez, worn by the effendi or urban classes. During the Arab revolt in the 1930s, the keffiyeh became associated with resistance because most rebels were from the peasantry, who were most affected by land purchases and displacement. Fighters trained by Izz ad-Din al-Qassam, such as those in the Black Hand, came from rural villages to fight against Zionists and the British. The fez disappeared from society replaced by the keffiyeh in an act of unity.
The keffiyeh’s distinctive fishnet design became popularized in the 20th century, with the black and white variant associated with Fatah and the red and white with the Marxist PFLP. It is incorrect to claim that the keffiyeh is solely a PLO symbol, though Yasser Arafat’s daily wear of the black and white keffiyeh cemented its association with Palestinian resistance. The keffiyeh has long symbolized resistance to Zionists and is a symbol of Palestinian unity. But has long been part of Middle Eastern head protection dating back thousands of years.
@OFeloussi @AIPAC@SenJohnThune After what they did to make Gaza unlivable and lets not mention 40k dead women and children. Crying anti-semitism or holocaust is a joke now. Wait till the independent journalist get in there. They’ll be the pariahs of the world. Hope it was worth it. 100 generations wont forgive
@lilmiszfarra@KantessienCfc@mrbarnicoat@IDF@ICRC It doesnt fit Israels narrative. Israeli hostages are in good health while Palestinian hostages are coming out with broken bones and no medical care while being tortured.
