If I had gone to a MH hospital when I was in severe #SSRI withdrawal and losing my mind with akathisia and suicidal, I would’ve been put on an antipsychotic with a new diagnosis I don’t actually have, and deteriorated further. Taking it into my own hands gave me a chance to heal.
@tylerblack32@markhoro Who’s “we”? Because I have yet to meet a single medical professional in my personal life who have a single clue, nor give half a fuck what causes antidepressant withdrawal or how.
@RyanMalphrus lol I was prescribed meds by a PCP for a fear of public speaking. When I tried to get off It 5 years later I almost offed myself and got diagnosed with OCD, depression, and anxiety, than promptly thrown on a new med. None of which I had before taking the drug. It was withdrawal.
@tylerblack32@ChrisPalmerMD@DrDimitrios Can you link me the evidence, such as a meta analysis showing SSRIs convincingly work over placebo? I’d also love to see similar evidence showing they don’t cause significant harm when used beyond 6-12 weeks, and also that they’re easy to safely discontinue after long term use.
@DrAnnieHickox Will loudly denounce the harms psychiatric medicine will, can, and have caused while simultaneously loudly denouncing a form of medicine built to optimize patients natural vitamin, mineral, thyroid, hormone levels, etc. How do you not feel stupid, I don’t get it.
“I’m 23 years old… and my clitoris is completely numb, like the back of my elbow. I can’t orgasm. I can’t feel love for my own mother. I can’t even enjoy music anymore.”
That was Laureen Friedman’s raw testimony at a recent Safety Advocates on Mental Health Care panel.
She lives with PSSD — Post-SSRI Sexual Dysfunction. After taking Zoloft, she woke up one day with total genital numbness, zero libido, permanent inability to orgasm, and a sudden emotional numbness she describes as “chemical castration” and an “emotional lobotomy.” What used to be a deeply emotional, empathetic, songwriting young woman now feels disconnected from the core human experiences of love and pleasure.
She says she was never warned this could happen even after stopping the drug.
Millions are prescribed SSRIs every year, often without being told about rare but potentially permanent side effects like PSSD. People deserve full informed consent about what they’re risking.
Have you or anyone you know experienced lasting sexual or emotional side effects from antidepressants?
I am still trapped on the same SSRI I was prescribed at 7 years old because every attempt to come off has resulted in severe, debilitating withdrawal....
At 23 years old, I decided I wanted to come off antidepressants. Despite having been on them virtually my entire life — throughout my childhood and brain development — my doctor tapered me off in just 6 weeks, following the same outdated and dangerous guidance many doctors still use today.
What followed was a severe full-body neurological crisis: nonstop physical, cognitive and psychological suffering unlike anything I knew a human being could endure.
When I went back to my doctor and told him I was in withdrawal, I was told antidepressant withdrawal “doesn’t exist,” that symptoms of “discontinuation syndrome” are “mild and only last two weeks,” and that what I was experiencing was proof I needed the drugs
After months of torturous suffering and countless emergency room visits, I had no choice but to reinstate the antidepressant. But even after reinstating, the neurological damage from the rapid, doctor-directed taper did not go away.
That is why the term “withdrawal” is often deeply misleading. For many people, coming off antidepressants can trigger a devastating neurological injury that persists for years.
I still do not feel normal. I am intermittently bedridden, and even as I type this, my brain feels like it is on fire.
I genuinely do not remember what happiness, love, or emotional connection are supposed to feel like anymore. So much of my cognition, personality, creativity, and ability to access my mind the way I once could feels altered or gone. Some days the suffering becomes so overwhelming that I genuinely do not know how much longer I can continue living in this condition.
Today, at 30 years old, I am still on the same medication I was prescribed as a child. I desperately want to come off, but every attempt has caused severe, debilitating withdrawal that has made it physically impossible.

@ronnoc_rd@DanielleGansky I wasn’t put on an SSRI for depression, so this is bullshit lmao I didn’t feel depressed once in my life UNTIL I tried discontinuing the poison in the first place. Hundreds of thousands of people are prescribed SSRIs for much more than depression.
I am sharing this here just to counter the demoralisation one can accumulate from listening to the ideological, defensive and often close-minded psychiatrists on this platform. In the broader world, many clinicians are open to learning about safe deprescribing, and issues with antidepressants prescribing. This is a letter sent by the chief medical director and medicines optimisation team of an ICB in England in response to webinars I delivered to hundreds of their prescribers.
