@elehelp @CCCAnimals Yeah, I agree. I suspect one of the reasons detecting quantity by smell is important is so that elephants can decide, from a distance, where to go for food. But I doubt they are making calculations like this for sugar cane trucks (since at harvest time the trucks are EVERYWHERE).
While we ID'd ~107 eles in this paper, we have now ID'd more than 200 - the pop estimate is ~250-300! We also used the cameras to ID eles using DAY & NIGHT footage, not an easy fete for the students in the lab! /3
