It has maintained that treaty through every Gaza war, every settlement expansion, every demolition of Palestinian homes in the West Bank, every eviction in Jerusalem.

It maintains the treaty because without American support, the Jordanian monarchy is not certain it survives.

The Palestinian population of Jordan is estimated at roughly half the country.

Half the country.

Watching their government maintain normal relations with the government killing their families across the river.

King Abdullah occasionally makes statements of concern.

Occasionally summons the Israeli ambassador.

Occasionally gestures toward displeasure.

Then the treaty continues.

The aid continues.

The normalization continues.

The king, educated at Sandhurst and Georgetown, who speaks better English than Arabic, who is received in Washington as a reliable moderate...

He has made his calculation.

His calculation has nothing to do with Gaza.

It has to do with the throne.
