My top ten favorite books meaning I think about them at least every few days:
Foundation
Rendezvous With Rama
Midnight at the Well of Souls
Little Big
The Arabian Nightmare
The Maltese Falcon
Solomon's Vineyard
My Family and Other Animals
The French Lieutenant's Woman
Voss
@jeffreytucker Is there resounding public opposition? If yes, how does one square that with chatbots being the most popular apps in the history of apps?
@kierkegarchist Having read what the OP has to say, it strikes me that women are far more comfortable with this state than men. And things get more complicated if the man has an actual girlfriend - she will be suspicious of any energy and attention he expends elsewhere.
@kierkegarchist I don't think she was saying "treat me like a guy friend." So you would still have to be cognizant of the fact that she is a woman. Whatever this between-state is it appears women very much want this: male friendship undisturbed by romance. This is an under-theorized phenomenon.
@RoKhanna@DAcemogluMIT But if the technology to replace humans exists, or even if the feasibility of such a technology exists, how long can one rig the economy to keep it at bay? Forever? What if other nations choose not to do that and their economies forge ahead?
@NewYorker Well, it looks like you had a lot of fun, but let's be serious here for a second - we are expecting LLM's to write at the level of the greatest writers in literary history 3 years after they began to speak?
@parallelcircle@PotatoDoggies@bookshelfbattle She could have a low libido - or she could just be not into him any more. Relationship discourse assumes attraction is endlessly renewable, but it may not be. For instance women need the man to be ahead of them along several axes, an edge that cannot be maintained forever.
@credenzaclear2 Vexing question. One answer is there is an impatience to have this problem be solved and behind us. Another is traditional science fiction assuming consciousness would come automatically with AI and robots. Finally, loneliness and a yearning for an alien other.
@arankomatsuzaki Interesting to see how people imagined AI would be. Read another tweet today where the poster was saddened that LLM's were not superior to humans, he seems to have expected angels.
@gailcweiner Mina Murati's Thinking Machines has a new voice approach. I don't like the prose-style of Claude (strong AI smell) and certainly not of ChatGPT. Grok is more neutral and less irritating. What breakthroughs in medicine? How about everything? I want cures for all diseases.
@Noahpinion Astonishing that Scalzi thinks he owns the concept of AI just because he is a science fiction writer. Most of the key thinkers of AI were not sf writers, and even within the genre he did not invent the various perspectives on AI, he just inherited them as a late practitioner.

Synthetic Persona Pretraining (SPP): Alignment from Token Zero
Current alignment is shallow - values bolted on after pretraining can be routed around. To solve this, we wrote the desired persona directly into pretraining data. Early results, but we're very excited. ๐งต
What if an AI system could sketch research directions before the field converges on them?
This paper explores the โalien spaceโ of science: coherent ideas that are unlikely to be cognitively available to todayโs research community.
